CZ 6.5 Swede for hunter class
« on: June 28, 2005, 08:51:02 AM »
What's the group's opinion on the CZ 550 American in 6.5x55 for hunter silhouette, in general?

It has a 8.6" twist.  Would this be able to stabilize the heavier bullets to take down the rams?

Additionally, how does the recoil of the 7mm-08 compare to the 260rem/6.5swede?  Noticable, tolerable or significant?  My bum shoulder from years of bullseye pistol shooting would like to know.  For a comparison, would it be less than a 44mag 300gr bullet from a light lever action rifle?  And is there any advantage to the 7 in reliably taking the rams?

I've read a lot of posts here praising the Tikka, but I have never seen one, let alone handled one.  A minor downside to living out in the boonies.

Thanks:  Eric

It's close to the perfect cartridge, IMHO. I wasn't all that crazy about the feel and "hold" of the one I handled but that's personal. A good cheekrest would be nice. The trigger will need work. The 8.6 twist should handle 140's for rams. The c.p.t load of 108's @ 2600 is a whole different deal from the ram load. The short animal load will have very light recoil. The 140 @ 2600 is hardly a crippler recoil-wise but you'll certainly be able to tell the difference. You don't say whether you're already an owner or just shopping. Sounds like the latter. If so, you might look for a Remington or Savage in .260. You can anticipate the recoil difference ROUGHLY by comparing the bullet weights you'll be throwing, but there are other variables. The two calibers are pretty close. Yes, I think the 7-08 with heavier bullets has some edge on the rams but don't forget that every caliber will lose some of them and there are 3 short animals to shoot at for every ram.
