Sabot plastic fouling
« on: June 29, 2005, 03:39:53 AM »
Was at the range this weekend shooting my TC Black Mountain Mag. 50 1:28 twist with 2 pellets pyro (100g) and TC shockwave. My first shot out of clean barrel in the bullseye but subsequent shots wandered off. The guy next to me said this was probably due to plastic from the sabot filling the rifling. So after every shot I ran a brass brush thru. This solved the problem as subsequent shots were right on. Has anyone else had this problem. The same guy said Power belts would solve the plastic fouling problem. But don't Power belts have a plastic belt ? Any help would be greatly appreciated as usual.

I agree with the guy at the range. Of my many muzzleloader rifles, my experience is that Powerbelts shoot best. Occasional spit patch 8 - 10 shots. Powder residue only, no plastic... Downside is cost... I do my plinking with roundball, and now use Powerbelts only for hunting. Same accuracy regardless of fouled barrel, but again I never go more than 8 - 10 shots without swab...

I have had plastic build up over time in my Knight (several sessions at the range) but never during a single session.
The powerbelts will probably help some, but they can add both some plastic AND lead, if you don't shoot the plated ones.

It sounds to me like your bore is a LOT rougher than it should be.  If I was you, I would try to smooth that bore out some in one of two ways:

1) shoot a couple dozen patched round balls or leads conicals thru it

or

2) Lap it some with J-Bs (or other brand) bore paste.  Work at least 6 patches of the stuff down your bore in quick, short pumping strokes....... working a clean patch the same way between each coated patch.  Then clean all the residue out of the bore with your normal cleaner.

Either of these methods will reduce your build up and increase your accuracy.

BTW, I did the round ball thing first with my Knight after I had shot sabots only for a year - accuracy was noticeably improved.  And I use the paste once or twice a year, whenever the gun's accuracy seem to tail of a little - works like a charm.

Trust God..........but keep your powder dry!

Switched to Powerbelt this weekend and got cured ! Fired 5 rounds without swabbing and all were in the 5" ring at 50 yards. Anybody want a bunch of sabots ?
