Rats finally on the Rise.

I haven't heard the results on the last FHA auction, but NAFA's may auction brought substantially higher rat prices.
Will these higher prices induce some of you to chase rats again this year?

I've been fortunate to have a local buyer, with a private demand that needs to be filled eeach year, so I really never saw the dip the rest of the country saw. I'm glad the take was short, but as is the case with ALL furbearers.....we have the ability to flood the market quickly, and decrease the price based on the volume offered. Never good. Coons were/are a good example of that.

In other words....I dislike theoretical price spikes and the surpluss it causes.

On the other hand.....I do like averages above $3. :)

Bill, the one thing in rat trappers favor.A good portion of the country has very few rats. The population in Minnesota is scattered and spotty,so too in many ,many areas. We will never see rats again like we did in the 60sand 70s.Our ever increasing raptor and coon population ,will see to that.

Yes sir....have seen a decline in my parts of Michigan as well, much like we discussed at the FTA last year. I guess that's another concern with the prices.....added pressure on the remaining populations. One way or another I'll be out there after them, but like in the past will leave seed and hope for the best. I sure love those little fur balls!

I will go after 'em a lil' harder. But I wouldn't stop if if the price dropped to 10 cents. They get me on alot of private land. The creeks and ditches around here are starting to show a nice increase (S. Wis. ).Or that's what the farmers are telling me. If I'm in for the rat's, most farmers let me take anything else I want. Besides, they are so much fun to catch.

Our rat populations are up and I have a sale for the meat as well as the pelts so I plan on hitting them hard. Trapping rats takes me back to being a kid and running a line before school. It don't get no better. Tony

I tend to think the price of rats varies more in relation to ranch mink prices than to harvest size.  As long as mink prices stay up we will be in good shape.

Rats did well at the May FHA sale as well tom.
