Hi all,
tomorrow I am ordering a superlight .243 and I have got some questions that you good  folks sure to be able to answer,
Can I shorten the syn stock to 13" to suit my short arms?
Can all barrel options can be fitted to the superlight frame?

Welcome aboard, Howard!! :D The frame of your super light is the same SB2 frame as the other NEF/H&R rifles, the barrel is just lighter on it. Other barrels will fit it, but H&R does not offer the accessory barrel program outside the US, so you'd be limited to used barrel. I've never cut a synthetic stock, but it appears that you should be able to cut it down, but the recoil pad will probably be a problem fitting if you cut it down much.

Like Quick said, I second that welcome.
 I don't have a 243 in an Handi, so I am not trying sound like a know it all, but only from what I have heard around here, the superlight's can be finicky to get shooting well. You might want to check more into it before you choose it over the normal 22" Handi.

as with the stock, some synthetic stocks are not suitable to cut down because they are semi hollow and you lose the screw threads when shortening, the pad is no problem as I could fit a aftermarket one which will be filed down to the correct fit. The lightweight appeals to me as I hunt in extreme country, 50%of the time the rifle is slung accross my back as both hands are required for climbing, so with your help and handloads, it is going to shoot, if I can get 1"-2" 3 shot groups I am happy. Our importer of the rifles offers barrel options, their Gunsmith fits them if I send up the frame.

Thought about that, but youth is only 11.75" long, the standard superlight is 14.25" and my ideal length is 13" length pull.

 another, Looked inside noway you can cut it down with out ruining it.'

get the youth stock and add thicker recoil pad or a slip on to gain length you need.Bronnels used to make fillers to add lenth to stocks!

I have 12 inches to trigger on youth model! but pad is a hair more than 5/8th thick.yottey

Welcome aboard. Pull up a chair, kick up your feet and stay awhile.

As for the 243 superlight. I think they accuracy is there in MOST of those barrels. I think most people just give up on them too soon. i had one and i wish i had never got rid of it. I didn't have it long enough to shoot a box of shells through it. O well. If the superlight is what you want i say go for it.

Now the stock issue. If you cut the adult size down you are gonna cut off the screw holes. But you might be able to get one of the Limbsaver slip on pads to fit it after you cut it off.

Welcome!
Get the youth with 12" pull and build up the difference with some sort of rubber pad or even plastic sheeting in 1/2" or 1" thickness as needed.

Then you still have synthetic and just have to use longer screws.

Well it turns out that the New Zealand importer doen't bring in the youth model so I have gone with the standard superlight .243, if the 14" pull bugs me I figure I can always order in a wooden stock and cut it down.
Now looking forward to the gun arriving  :grin: and getting upto the range this weekend to try it out, you think I should try it with out any tinkering or should go to the oring thing straightaway and whats the go on floating the forestock? Is a question of making sure it isn't touching the barrel except the oring etc?

Buy what YOU want, is what I always say. Everyone has an opinion, YOU the buyer is the one making the decision, though, and not them.
Like Varminter said I too believe (from what I have seen here) that people give up on their guns too quickly sometimes. When in reality all they needed to do is just experiment. You sound like one who nows what he is doing so I believe you won't be disappointed.
When you do get it, I would go shoot it without any modifications first-just a good cleaning. Then try the other tricks if not satisfied.

Well anyone that knows me, I like to be different ie hunting with a single shot, and prepared to put the work in to get what I like to work, so will keep you guys upto date as things go, have found this forum extremely helpful and friendly and will enjoy reading all the old messages and joining in with the new ones,

It arrived today and I think it is perfect for my needs at present(that means I can start thinking about other barrels :grin: , very pleasantly surprised, the trigger breaks clean at 3.5lbs out of the box  :o  , now to start to reloading for it tonight and taking it to the range on Saturday,

howard - where abouts in NZ are you? I thought I was the only Kiwi signed up to Graybeards H&R Forum!

I find Federal ammo gives no FTEs - Winchester was really sticky for some reason. I have a SS 243 and have really enjoyed it. Good luck!

From what I have read so far on this site, the lighter bullets seem to give the best accuracy. I have only used 100 grain, but 85 seems the best.

Still getting my head around the bombing in London - a Kiwi mate is in the Coldstream Guard and most recently has been guarding Buck Palace... numbing stuff.

I will try some 87gr Hornady as well. I presume Good Keen Man that you don't reload, so what factory loads have you tried and go well?Where in NZ are you?  
There is likely to be very few Kiwis who havn't got someone they know in London, my boss arrived there for a holiday on Monday to see his daughters, hopefully I will hear  from him today.
