Not a joke,.

CMP auction of a single M1, dated 1954, over 100 bids, rifle is NIB and never issued.

The winner paid $11.005 plus shipping. I'm totally blown away..

I saw a SS (Nazi) 98K Mauser that had a asking price of $10,000. Thats a lot of money for a Mauser.

I never thought they would go so high so quickly but in the near future they will get there just do because they have been under dogs and under priced for so many years. I have seen a lot of pretty "mint" looking garands for around $1000 at gun shows and i'm sure it will change now too. I just seen a few FN49 7mm's for $1,500. :eek: The 30-06 must be pushing $2,000? I hope this trend doesn't go like the 41 johnson did from $1,200 to $4,000 in less than 2 years. Surplus Military guns are like land they just ain't making anymore I often wondered why they were cheaper than modern guns. :roll: They can only go higher from here. BigBill

I agree that while 11K sounds like a ton of money for an M1, you have to think about it in terms of collector value. You also have to figure "auction fever" into the equation.

99.9% of ALL M1's have been rebuilt at least once and finding one that hasn't been is very difficult. Finding one that is "factory new" and never issued is darn near impossible.

I have a 53 Springfield that was never rebuilt (it was issued and used) that's been appraised at over $2000. Factory new would jump that value significantly.

BTW; On auction sites you have to watch out for shrills too I have run into a few already. They bid against you to drive up the price even though they don't really want to buy the gun. A shrill can be envolved with the seller too lets say a buddy. This is why most of the time I have a set limit, a max bid on how much its worth to me before i even bid. I never do more than one bid days in advance too that only drives the prices even higher before the last day. I may bid once just to test the waters then i watch the posting to see if anyone else wants it too. There's a lot of tricks to doing auctions too just don't get caught up in the bidding when it gets out of site, don't get sucked into the shrills game. BB

And I remember seeing those Johnsons back in the mid-60's at Ye Old Hunter in Alexandria, Virginia.

I think that they were about $79.95 or there abouts. SMLE's were about 24.95-34.95 depending upon model and condition. P-38's were under $50.00 and new Colt 1911's were $82.50.

Of course, wages weren't much either so the actual cost was probably much higher.
