Floating a barrel on your remington
« on: July 07, 2005, 06:13:09 AM »
I have a model 7 that I bought a different stock for.  I am having trouble getting it to group.  A gunsmith glassbedded the action but not the recoil lug.  The bedding job really did not help at this point.  Now, the barrel is floating with not much accuracy change.  I guess I am going to take it back to get the recoil lug glass bedded.  Would you guys be so kind to share any experience with your stock and your model 7.  This is killing me because it shot alot less than an inch, and now it is lucky to shoot
1 1/2 inches.  Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

What is the caliber and barrel length of your rifle?  If it's one of the advertised lightweight rifles you can't expect miracles.  I have a Browning Micro-medallion in .308Win.  It weighs only 6.0lbs, with a short, thin 20" barrel, and packs a lot of recoil.  I glass bedded the action, floated the barrel and attached a Pachmyer Decelerator Pad on it.  Now it will print slightly less than 1" groups (5 at 100yds).  For what it's worth my last 2 Remingtons have had a little bumper piece attached to the end of the stock.  I guess it's a dampener, but I don't find it helps any.  I have it removed when the barrel is free floated, and it seems to shoot better.    I
think the little bumper piece in the forend allows the manufacturer to save money by producing thinner barrels.  Just one mans opinion, but I don't trust any of them any longer.  Best wishes.

This is a 243.  It shot unbelievable before I re-stocked it.  It is hard to describe what has happened.

My light 700 Remingtons (and all my other rifles with light weight barrels), always shot well with the lug glassed, along with a couple of inches of barrel ahead of the lug.
