.223 23" Carbine Bull Barrel loads
« on: July 08, 2005, 02:43:20 AM »
All, I have a 24" Bull barrel in .223.  Have only had the opportunity to shoot factories out of it so far.  55 grain remingtons didn't do so well, 50 gr Winchester Silvertips are looking alot better.   Thinking of starting off with 52 gr Match HPBT's (Sierra or Hornady) and IMR 4895 or Blue Dot.

Looking for handloading advice if anyone has a pet load, please share.

I had one of those but traded it for a 21" stainless.  I don't reload for this round but I shot almost every bullet weight available in factory ammo.  It had a clear preference for bullets of 55gr or less.  In fact, it shot 50gr ammo the best of all I tried.  I didn't try any 52gr match stuff though.  It probably would have been even better.

I've got a 24" bull barrel for my contender that I've had for a few years.

27gr of W748 and Hormady 50gr SXSP with a cci small rifle primer has been my go to load, may barrel also liked the Nosler 40gr Btip. but the SXSP is cheaper and does great on prairie dogs.

good luck.

I have a 22" 223AI and it likes 50 Nosler BT the best with 26.5 grains of H322. This powder is an extreme powder and does like it claims in not changing perfomance in temperature changes.

I shoot  23 grains of IMR 3031 with the 52 gr sierra match king I have tried that load in 3 223's and the worst it would do was 1 inch groups at a 100 yards.
