Ruger Bisley in 480 Ruger?
« on: July 08, 2005, 06:08:46 AM »
In the recent issue of Guns & Ammo there was an article that said that Ruger might soon come out with a 480 in the Bisley.  Has anyone else heard about this possibility from somewhere other than G&A?  It would probably have to come with a 5-shot cylinder, which is fine by me!

If anyone at Ruger is reading this post: Please do make this gun because I'll buy one for sure, as will at least 5 or 6 other guys at my gun club!!!

Haven't heard about the Bisley, but they do make a Super Redhawk in 480.  And its a 6-shot.  I bought the 44 Mag instead just because I was wanting to shoot alot, and the cost of ammo was alot more.

Mauser;
I wrote that article and as I stated in it, it was not an official announcement by any means. Ruger is very tight lipped about what they are working on but I posed a question to a Ruger engineer about a possible 480 in the Bisley. He told me, as they usually do, he wasn't free to discuss it. I then asked, "If I were to speculate in print that Ruger would soon chamber the .480 in a Bisley, do you think I'd end up with egg on my face?" He replied, "No, I don't believe you would." That, combined with the fact it makes sense for Ruger to chamber their own round in more guns than just the Super Redhawk, led me to make the speculation. There were other factors as well but the gist is it was speculation based on both inside info and common sense.

How about the 500 Smitt and Western short in five shot Bisley also. I'm the guy with the six shot 475 and it works fine so far. I've had the gun since January so it hasn't killed too much yet!! Just got notice that I havef a really good whitetail in Wyoming to look forward to this fall. Better go check for my elk tag.

If Ruger makes a 480 Bisley, I'll buy one, provided they don't jack the price way up over the standard price. 8)

When I first heard about the .480 Ruger, I couldn't wait to get one.  With all the articles I had read about the .475 and the beautiful converted Bowen and Linebaugh Bisleys, I figured Ruger was onto a sure thing.  Who would have figured they would chamber it in something only a mother could love and requires a sling to carry.  They really put this round in a Bisley and I am in big trouble.  I just convinced the wife that my Accusport .45 Bisley was the be all to end all in a hunting handgun.

Ruger put out a FIVE SHOT revolver? Not in this life time guys. Not gonna happen. They can't accept that it needs to be a FIVE shot due to what it would do to their image.

Just very recently I read an article by another writer other than Dan, I do not recall who but I'm thinking maybe Brian Pearce but might not have been. As I recall he stated he knew Ruger had tossed the idea around and did some preliminary work on the idea and shelfed it. He was asking them to reconsider as I recall.

Iffen I was a betting man (which I ain't) I'd bet good money against Ruger doing it. Shame tho I might actually try one. I do like the .480 but man that RB is one heavy rascal to put on the hip.

Seems to me that I've heard a similar remark from you regarding the G2 Contender.. and its here!  So all I can hope for is that Ruger does bring out a 480 Bisley........not to make you look bad, just cause I want one, bad!

If Ruger uses same technology/steel as on 454 and 480 SRH, I don’t see any reason why they couldn’t make 480 Bisley, even as a six-shooter.

Not a huge fan of the .480 but I'd go with one in a SA.  I also recall back yrs ago, Ruger was designing and actually prototyped a .50 on thier SA frame.  Obviously it would've been a 5 shot.  It was to to be out to coincide with their 50th anniversary.  It too never was a commercial release.  Just shows those boys in CT and NH are thinkin'.  :-)

The more I think about it, I would buy a 480 bisley or blackhawk ASAP. I just don't care for super redhawks no matter what caliber they are. That's why I don't have one yet although a friend wanted to sell me his srh 480.My .02

I spoke to my gunsmith today about this topic and he was of the opinion that Ruger won't do it.  His reasoning was that the tooling, etc costs for a firearm of relatively limited appeal would prevent them from doing it.

My impression of Ruger is that they have seemed willing to take chances historically.  The 480 is a cartridge with their name on it and I would agree with others that there would be some motivation to chamber it in as many guns as they can.

??????????????????

I can't imagine why they haven't done it already. There are plenty of SA shooters who would love to get the .480 cartridge, but can't afford one of the custom guns, by Gary Reeder, et al.

If Ruger did step up and make the tooling for a 5 shot Bisley/Blackhawk, they could get much more than one model out of it.

.480 and .454 would both be possible.  I'm sure that they could figure out a couple more good offerings also.

I think that a 5 shot .454 might even sell better than a .480, but if it's the .480 that motivates the creation of a 5 shot Ruger, who cares?

As far as Ruger's negative attitude about 5 shot revolvers, what's their problem?  It's not like making a 5 shot revolver is going to instantly cause all of their 6 shot revolvers to explode the next time they are fired.

They can just say that a 6 shot cylinder with sufficient safety margins was too large for the Bisley/Blackhawk frame, so to offer these more powerful calibers a 5 shot cylinder was used.

If they do it, I'll take two.  Either matching .480's or one .480 and one .454.

I'm frankly a sissy when it comes to handgun recoil beyond .44 Magnum levels in a double action. I carried a 5 1/2-inch stainless Redhawk with very heavy cast loads on a fishing trip near Wrangell, Alaska, and was glad to sell it when I got home, as it was just no fun to shoot. Also owned an SRH in .480, and again, it was more than I cared for. But if Ruger builds a five-shot SA in .480, I'd buy in a heartbeat. For me personally, an SA, whether standard hogleg or Bisley grip configuration, is a lot more comfortable than a DA grip.

:cb2: BillinOregon;

I also had a 5.5" Redhawk, and it was the only .44 I've ever had that hurt to shoot. Have a DA Anaconda, and it doesn't hurt at all. Traded the Redhawk for another .44 Bisley, and still believe I got the best end of the deal.

Don't know if I need a .480 Bisley, but I'd sure give it some serious thought. Think I'd rather have one in .41 mag.

Welcome to Graybeard Outdoors! Like you, I would have to buy one even
though the 44's I have along with my Contender rounds will do everything
that I need to do with a handgun, but whose counting.

Huh?  Man, if they would come out with a Super Blackhawk Hunter in .480 Ruger, I would be standing in line to get one!  Come on ratgunner, they are soooo sweet! :D

My Fav. pistol That doesn't exist!
« Reply #22 on: December 17, 2005, 09:41:07 PM »
My favorite model that doesn't exist would be a Ruger SuperBlack Hawk Bisley in .480 ruger with a 10 1/2in. barrel.  topped with target type notch&bead sights.  What do you guys think?  Can't you also shoot the .475Linbaugh out of the .480 cylinder?

     Until then here's a Super BlackHawk 10 1/2in. in .44 Rem. Mag

You can already get a "ruger like"  SA in a 5 shot 480 Ruger , 475 Linebaugh.  It is the Magnum Research BFR.  Handles like a Ruger.  Action is like a Ruger, Frame is "same" as a Ruger.  Many Ruger parts will fit it with little or no modification.  And it is available a a factory gun without the cost or wait of a custom built on a Ruger platform.  I too would like to see Ruger produce a 480 SBH, but I do not think that will happen and if it does it will most likely not handle the 475 Linebaugh along with the 480.  Check out the BFR.  It has a transfer bar safety like a Ruger and it locks up almost as tight as a FA.   It also, mine at least, holds groups as tight or tighter than a finely tuned SBH.  Great packin, huntin "sixgun"  Why wait for a Ruger when you can get one now?

No, you can do it the other way around, the Linbaugh case is longer than the 480 Ruger case.
