I bought my latest springer, the M54 from an auction. The dealer is reputable but knew nothing about air guns.
The rifle arrived prestine as promised and on advice I got here I bought the BSA 3 X 12 50 mm tube and mounted the thing.
To the back yard range I went and never once gave a thought to running a patch downbore.
I set up the Chono and the 1st shot cracked like a hi-vel .22 r.f and the speed registered 1175 f.p.s.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is this my 1st 'diesel'? I didn't like it one bit. I suspect the dealer oiled the thing and maybe sprayed oil down the bore.
Anyway the smoking stopped after about 5 shots and velocities with Premier heavies went in the 850/870 ish range. I suppose this is where it should be.
I cleaned the barrel after 10 rounds with the proper rod/jag/patch and RWS bore cleaner and it was dirty/tarry looking.
Burnt oil?
It took about 8 wet patches and same dry to clean it till a patch came out pretty much white.
The gun prefers heavies and I'm guessing this is normal.
The rifle has less than 200 shots total through it and accuracy is NOT stellar.
I get average 3/4" groups at 25 yards with the heavies it seems to prefer.
Kodiak Heavy Match, Premier Heavies and so forth.
I'm told or I've read somewhere that it takes about 1000 rounds for these things to "seat and settle" and accruacy improves.
True?
Lawdog, you and several others here seem to know a lot about air guns.
Would you be so kind to help a newbie with some advice and teach an old dog a few things? :-D
