338-06 Range Report!!!
« on: July 08, 2005, 01:02:34 PM »
Spent a couple hours on the 100yd range this afternoon, rained most of the time but that's better than being too hot!!! Shot 30 rounds thru the new 338-06 Ultra barrel, worked up a near max load of H414 and the 250gr Sierra Gameking BTSP for starters, don't know if this bullet will be hunted with, but I figured for $13 a box, they're good for barrel break-in, anyway!! I was pleasantly surprised that as I neared the max, the groups shrank considerably.  I'm real happy with Wayne York's work, to say the least!!!

Quick,

I would be happy with Wayne also! Looks like he did a great job!
Oh and yes, great reloading and shooting on your part.  :agree:

So how was the recoil?

Thanks!! Elk steaks it is!!!

Norse, recoil is tolerable, but I have it tamed with 2¼lbs of lead in the laminated stock, a limbsaver recoil pad and wear a Past magnum recoil shoulder pad, so it can be as rough as it wants and I wouldn't get hurt!!! This same set up works well with 300gr 45-70 loads at 2400fps which does have a bit more recoil!!

You know it sure is fun trying out different calibers. One of these days I am going to make a post on what barrel to get next or perhaps just get another handi. Did handi ever make a 338-06 ?. I have a 30-06, perhaps the 338-06 would be worth a look. Yours sure seems to shoot real well. You know I just need an excuse is all

H&R didn't make a 338-06, but they did make a 35 whelen, not much difference in em, .338" bullet compared to .358"....much bigger selection of bullets though, a bit higher BC, too.

Quick
This was done to a 25-06 barrel correct?  I'm looking at one source for the cartridge specs and it seems the 25-06 is .441 at the shoulder but so is the 338-06.  Problem is, according to this source, the 25-06 shoulder is .048 longer than the 338-06 brass.  Is this true on yours?  Do you just load in the longer 25-05 brass?

How does this affect your resizing?  It would seem to not resize all the way to the web of the brass, or are these numbers different than what you got done?

Handi,

I've only shot .30-06 brass in it, but I did have Wayne cut the neck so I could shoot Weatherby A-square brass in it which has a longer neck and is thicker so when a .338 bullet is seated, it fits in the neck, the neck in the chamber is cut to .370"...... Loaded Weatherby 338-06 A-square ammo does fit in the chamber just fine. I had no stuck cases with the .30-06 brass and expect the Weatherby brass to work fine. Mac sent me half a box of the Weatherby brass so I could make sure it worked ok. Due to the difference between the 30-06 case size and that of the Weatherby case size, both Mac's and my barrels had to go back to Wayne so he could cut the neck bigger. Apparently the other differences aren't enough to worry about as long as the length doesn't cause a problem.

Does the fired brass measure out any differently than the specs for the 338-06?

Since the chamber was a 25-06 to begin with and Wayne only changed the neck size, I wouldn't expect any big changes to the brass. I did measure the brass after it was fired, it grew approx .002" in length with the heaviest load I shot which I would consider nominal in my limited experience.
