I have a new model 85SS and was wondering about putting a reduced hammer (#9), and reduced trigger spring (#9) in it. Anyone have any personal experience with this combo? How hard was it to put in, (or should I have a Smith do it ) any tips, etc. ? Thanks...

I bought the AGI gunsmithing DVD for Taurus wheel guns, got the Wolf complete spring set (model 85). I installed just the trigger spring (#9) after watching the DVD. It took only about 20min. total. I may install the #9 hammer spring in the future after I'm satisfied with the trigger spring.. I'll let you know what I think after I have a chance to shoot it. This is a 2am anti intruder gun so I want to be sure of it's function.

I've used Wolff Spring on three (3) revolvers; a Taurus® 669CP & 617 & a S&W® Mdl 37. They have worked great in the S&W® for over 5 years. In the Taurus® I had numerous FTF's in the 669. I switched the springs to the 617 a year ago & had had no FTF's in over 1000 rounds.

Thats why I started with just the trigger spring. One step at a time. If all goes well with just the T spring, then I'll try adding the hammer spring. If I have problems then with both springs in, I'll know which is the problem child...

Trigger pull single action at 3 pounds even (48oz), with 9lb trigger only spring in.. I'm unsure what it was before. A guess would be 4-4.5 lb. pre install. (sorry I should have checked before hand!)

You could have two guns, exactly the same (model#), consecutive serial #'s and each would act far differently. One might shoot great & the other have numerous FTF's with the same springs. You pay your money & take your chances; Go figure.

I know, I'm a .22lr guy and it's that way BIG time with .22's. One loves this ammo, the next one off the line can throw the same ammo like a shotgun!!

The 85 shot better in both SA and DA with the lighter trigger spring installed.. No FTF problems with Corbons, Gold Dots, or Winchester 125 JHP+P, or Win 125s JSPs.
I think I'll put the reduced hammer spring in tonight.. (#11to a #9) I don't know if I'll be able to get a poundage reading after the install, my RCBS spring scale won't go high enough for comparring the two. I will check in later. Perhaps in a week. My indoor range will be very hot here as theres no AC, and the outside temps are going to be in the high 80s to mid 90s ( and HUMID ).

Both springs in, (#9 trigger, #9hammer)and the SA pull has gone down from 3lbs.(48oz) to 2&3/4lbs.(44oz). The DA pull is allot nicer with the lighter hammer spring in. I will update after I have a chance to test for reliability later this week. Not hard to install, as I followed the instructions on the AGI Taurus DVD that I got from Midway. Again only about 15-20 min. total time. If all works well the aprox. 50.00 that I spent between the spring kit and the DVD to me at least is worth it. I figure that I would have spent at least that much to have a smith do the same thing... As this is a defence gun I won't be doing any other mods to this gun.

FAILURE !!
After putting in both springs (WOLF) (#9 & #9) I had light strikes shooting in slow fire double action.. Single action worked fine, but one out of a cyclinder of five wouldn't go off DA. I have taken out the hammer after market (#9), and put back in the stock (#11) spring. To bad, that light hammer spring sure made for a nice DA pull. Your mileage may vary but for MY 85, I can only use the lighter trigger spring. If you try this only do one spring at a time, then test fire and check to see if your guns still reliable. It has to go bang everytime you pull the trigger if it's going to be used for CCW or home defence..
