Powder choice for 223 and 308
« on: July 12, 2005, 11:35:45 AM »
I have a 223 and 308 Encore, both 15" barrels.  For the most part the 223 will be using 55 grain bullets and the 308 165 or 170 grain bullets. If you could choose one multi purpose powder to work up loads, what would it be and why?? I'm looking to find the best powder so I would have to spend $ on buying 2 types. Is this realistic or just wishfull thinking ??

I use H-335 in my 223.  I don't have a 308 in a pistol (Encore) but I have reloaded for it in rifles.  H-335 will work, but a bit slower powder might be better.  SO, Varget is slower, yet it will also work in the 223.  If ones gets too slow of a powder, the case capacity of the 223 will hinder its performance.  Something in the Varget burn range would probably work for both.  H-335 is my CHOICE for the 223.  I feel it would work in the 308 also.  Maybe you might know someone who could let you try some of their H-335 if they have it.  Good-luck...BCB

Varget works really well in both my 223 and my 7-08 (which is close enough to the 308).  I get at least MOA with both calibres. It's not the best for velocity, but for consistent, accurate performance, it's definitely THE powder to go with for these two.

You might take a look at Winchester 748.

I also like Hodgdon's Varget in my .308 Win. Remington Varmint Synthetic. So far, I've gotten 1" groups at 200yds from a rest. That spurs me on to do better, jd45.
