Refinishing Handi stock?
« on: July 15, 2005, 10:33:36 AM »
I have a handi - .22 Hornet. The standard stock is very plain looking. Is this due to the way NEF finishes the stock or due to type of wood used? If I strip the stock and refinish it, will it look any different/nicer? I appreciate any advice offered.  :-)

refinishing

I have never done a gunstock, but I have refinished lots of furniture.  I have found that each piece of wood has it's own characteristics.  It will take the stain differently.  Really, you just have to strip it and go from there.  Once you have it down to bare wood then you will know how dark or light you need to stain it to get the desired look.
If I had to guess, I would say the stocks and forends are probably dip stained for the standard stocks.  If you take some time, yes, they will probably look much nicer after you redo them.  I have seen some pics posted by guys who have refinished their stocks.  There are some real nice ones.
Don't know if this helped...Just my 2 cents.  Go for it!  Be sure to post some before and after pics.  Good Luck!

It will look alot better. I took the one off of my 223 HB and refinished it. I put an alcohol based sugar maple stain on it, then put Tru Oil on it. I'll try to some pics when i get a chance but it looks alot better than it did. I've got about 5 coats of tru oil on it and plan on putting about 5-10 more coats on it.

If you are gonna use the tru oil. Make sure you use 000 steel wool on it between coats and wipe it off before you apply another coat.

This is the second time i refinished this one. First time it was too dark for my taste so i stripped it again and used sugar maple. The first time i used a fruitwood stain.

If you are going to refinish it i would not use a water based stain. Or if you like sort of a blonde looking stock just sand and apply Tru oil.

If you mix 2 parts varnish and 1 part linseed oil it turns out pretty nice also. experiment on a different piece of wood first to make sure the mixture is right.

Stock finish
« Reply #8 on: July 16, 2005, 12:30:03 AM »
If you really mess up on a stock, you can always use spray on truck bed liner to hide your sins.  I recently bought a Browning A-bolt that a guy had dropped out of a tree.  Needless to say, the stock was smashed.  I used Brownells bedding compound to repair the stock, filling in all the missing bits with the glass reinforced epoxy.  It looked like Frankenstein.  I went to the local Auto Zone and bought a small can of spray on Herculiner for $7 and sprayed it.  It looked like a synthetic stock, but without that annoying plastic hollow sound, and it was much grippier.  I loved the stock and hated the rifle, so I sold it.  Nothing looks as good on a rifle as a nice wood stock, but if you wind up with a butt ugly piece of wood, this way you can at least use it.  Hope this helps!

I used Tung oil and Linseed Oil.  I put on several coats of Tung Oil Finish to fill the pores (rubbing with 0000 steel wool b/t coats), then put a couple of coats of Linseed oil on.  It looked really nice, but the linseed never really did set up.  It always had that tacky feel to it.  Ended up scarring the fore stock really bad shooting it, and decided to redo the whole thing.

What I ended up doing was finishing it with the tung oil finish, and putting several coats of Urathane over the tung oil.  It has kind of a satin finish to it and it looks really good.

This isn't an OEM Handi stock though.  It's a target stock from Gunstocks Inc.

Well, I was going to post a pic of it, but for some reason all of my pics are gone from Hunt 101.  What's going on over there anyway?[/img]

Hello,

Hunt101 is currently having server issues, and I don't know when or if it will
be back.

Here is a site that is similar to Hunt101, it is a good, reliable, free hunting
photo site that you can use in the meantime.
