Couldn't sleep at 2am so i went fishing alone
« on: July 18, 2005, 10:02:55 AM »
I went fishing at 2am the other morning and wow the noises I heard just were awesome in the dark.  It had me more interested than in fear.  First i heard some sort of flute music or wind chimes? Very weird stuff this was comming from the forest where there are no houses I'm a few football fields away from the closest house and the others are on the other side of the lake.  The wind was very light blowing at me but i'm not sure if the sound can travel that far if one of the houses had some sort of wind chimes.  But it actually sounded like a flute playing each note for a while softly then it would change tones.  My second problem was some sort or snorting/weesing type noises that was comming from near my car in the woods it was very loud like air hose type loud.  It happened many times. I was sitting in my car in the dark there once ready to get out and i heard what sounded like chest pounding/thumping.  I have no clue to what was going on but at first light it all settled down and it got quiet.  It was very weird.  I also seen another bobcat about two miles away on the way there its the third bobcat i seen this week.  There's bobcats all over this place.  I heard a bear hootin there last weekend in the early am too.   And i found bear tracks not far away from there too. Its a big wooded forest for my area.  The tree knocking i heard is about 1 1/2 miles away from this spot.  I don't have a clue but they own the night.                                                              BigBill

It sure sounds like my 9mm or 45acp is going on my fishing trips from now on for sure.

I have heard what you are describing, I swear you can almost hear really silent voices to. I am sure it is my mind just playing tricks one me, or it might really be something. I still find it fascinating.

I would rather hear strange things in the wind when I am at my remote property that hear the drone of cars on the highway or the "city noise".
I love shotguns! :cb2:

Ok i thought my mind was playing tricks on me too but the strange music lasted for quite sometime. It was like play a straight plain note then it would change to another different note after like 30 seconds.  Its funny i have never heard it during the day there in the light and i'm there everyday.  I have no clue what the heavy weezing was either. My buddy with his 18 little friends are going with me now(9mm).
I'm chasing a new state record in Ct. its 12lbs 14oz. and i'm on a place that has big bass in it my biggest so far is 10lbs. but i have had bigger ones on and lost them.  I have seen these bigger gals swim by me sometimes too when i'm landing smaller bass they seem to come in to see whats going on.  I didn't catch anything that nite but i can see her in the shallows swimming everyday she is a big one but no bite yet out of her. I tried early mornings, fishing nites, new baits, scents and now new plastics of all shapes and sizes.  I just bought some uncle josh "porkers" to try too.  The porkers are more stealthy to cast so i don't spook her plus their scented too.  I know the bass like the uncle josh pork trailers on my spinnerbaits so i figured i'd try the 7"x3/4" porkers.  I just got some awesome two toned colored worms too with flakes. They look so good i'd eat the dam things if i was a fish(maybe). I have to do this before my health gets worse.  I can only fish near the car now I can't walk too far and i can fish for an hour or two so my fishing time is handicapped too.  I'd be happy with one more big bass even if it doesn't break the record just one more "10".                          BigBill

TM7 I have been dying to fish in VT.  I have the white river minutes away and in the other direction is lake dunmore and lake champlain.  I have an invite to go but i haven't made it up there yet maybe when the weather cools off.                                                            BigBill

I fished the white river up in the Rochester area when it was known for 20"+browns years ago.  I also heard about the native trout in the green mountain national forest near me but i haven't made the trek up there yet.  I just bought some new fly fishing stuff to learn it too.  I have trout, salmon and stuff for bass fishing too.                     BigBill

How are you doing???  The night is awesome here lots of stuff happening while night fishing.  Lots of bobcats too I seen 3 already in 3 different places.  There's more predators here than most think there is. This is the week of the full moon so anything can happen at night now. Stay cool thats why i fish in the wee hours of the mornings now its too hot when the sun comes up 95 degrees sucks I wish i could save some of it for the winter.  Its been a weird year for heat.  The last time i seen heat like this it was a great blackbear season in the fall in Vermont. It seems they all move out of the deep forest.  I wonder if its the heat that triggers this because they say hot summer its going to be a colder than normal winter so maybe they hit the orchards more to put fat on.  I know we had a late spring so that means an early fall too.  Now my point is the bigfoot activity may increase too lets see whats happens??    BigBill

BigBill,

Could the weeze / snort sound have been a deer near your car?

Concerning the Bear hoot :  I grew up in Vermont hunting and fishing and was always told by old-timers about bear "Hoots".  I just found out recently however that it's just a myth that a black bear will "hoot".
When I was in highschool my friend and I  were ATV camping in a very remote area of Vermont.  Late at night  we heard an incredibly loud "Hoot" from on top of a nearby hill.  The thing I remember is how loud it was and it sounded like a person yelling the word H-O-O-T. It was not an owl it sounded more like something doing an impression of an owl. My friend and I were a little scared because we assumed it was a bear.  The animal continued down the hill toward our campsite making the same vocalizations.  When it got within 20 yards of our campsite it circled around the site and continued on its way.  We kept hearing it until it I estimate a 1/4 mile away.  For the last fifteen years I thought that it was a bear, it wasn't until recently that I found out bears don't hoot.  Now I have no idea what it was that night.

Its a fact that bears do hoot we been thru this before here already. When i first purchased my camp in Vermont I thought i had a lot of owls but my buddy who lives up there told me that they are blackbears calling from mountain top to mountain top looking for a friend.  Probably because they can't dial 1 800 collect.  When i hear them near by i can mimic them and bring them closeby too.  Its kind of ery to hear them at 1am when its dead quiet too but its great to know they are there too.  My camp is in the heart of blackbear country thats one of the reasons why i bought it.

Black bear attacks on humans are frequently predatory in nature. Carrying a weapon for protection is definitely a smart move.

D MAN,
I've been told that too many tugs on the Mason jar can cause a ringing in the ears. As for the wheezing and the chest thumping, they probably came from you after you heard the ringing. LOL  :-D

micmac,,,,,that's interesting about the h-0-0-t sounds. I've heard strange noises in the Vermont woods too. May I ask, what remote area were you and friend camping in Vermont?

....................................................TM7

I thought they were owls too when i first heard them too but when I mimic them they answer me and i have even brought them to me.  One night we were fixing my trailer door(camp) and we had the hootin start as soon as it got dark and it came within about 30yds from us then passed us by.  We were still hearing it towards the other side of the valley(I'm on a ridge) and as we finished our work up I started hootin and brought it right back to us again.  Like i said before sometimes its an ery sound to hear in the wilds in the pitch black dark at 1am.  The north country adds new meaning to the word dark heck you can't see your hand infront of your face most of the time unless the moon is out.
