Whatever happened with the 460???????
« on: July 18, 2005, 08:30:41 PM »
I read an article about it and there was some discussion about that time, but I have not heard anything since.  Did S&W give up on it?

I finally handled a S&W 460 at the gunshop yesterday.  Prettymuch what you would expect, an X frame 500 with smaller holes.  Even though it probably weighs a little more than the 500, it is still very balanced and feels good in the hand, mine at least.  Now if S&W would only let the owners change barrels, they would have the perfect package with the 460.  I wonder if or when they will make a short barrel version?

:cb2: Don't know about a shorter barrel—it might cut back on that gazillion feet per second velocity which is their big selling point.   Cutting the barrel down to 4" like they did the .500 might limit you to only 800 yard shots!  :)

Your right Griz, if a handgun won't kill all the way out to 1000 yards, what good is it.

Hey Rolltide...How much was that 460 going for?  I'm kinda thinking that it would make a great gun cabinet brother for my Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter... :biggun:

:cb2: I hope they do get the bugs worked out of it. The 460 would be more versatile (454 & 45 Colt) than the 500 and (to me) be the better choice between the two. Bigger ain't always better.  :)

I actually put my hands on a S&W 460 during my lunchbreak today...It feels real nice       ...It priced out at approximately $950 and change...It was listed as $100 more than the 500 mag...Man do those X Frame Revolvers look huge in the display case but actually balance real well when you take them in your hands...I had to give the 460 back to the counterperson before I put one on their 60 day lay-away plan...

I handled a 460 today in the local gun shop. I was impressed with the fit and finish and the smoothness of the action right out of the box. It was priced at $995. Gee, that is a lot of money! I do find the 460 to be interesting and in some ways, more versatile than the 500. The 460 cartridges are impressive too. Out of my price range....

You really need to look at the 500 Mag before you say the 460 is more versatile. The 500 Mag can be loaded with bullets from 275 gr. to 700 gr.  There are guys out there shooting there 500 Mags well past 150 yards and having great success with the 500 Mag. I personally do not see any advantage to 460 has over the 500 Mag.

Now I am a S&W fan, but I think the 460 was made to sell more X frames. To peak the interest of the guys that don't want to make the step into a 500 Mag. But that is just my opinion.  :D

RH1,

You make a very good point about the 500. I was mainly referring to the 460s ability to shoot 454 and 45 Colt ammunition if one desires to. The 500 is quite a cartridge. Some will find the 460 more to their liking.

I will agree with you on that. It does allow for a bunch of different rounds. :D

or....You could look into the BFR in 460 S&W...It is going for about $100-$150 less than the S&W 460XVR, weighs less and comes with the scope rail.  Two different barrel lengths are offered...7.5" and 10".

I got rid of my 8 3/8 500 Mag and got my BFR 500 Mag back, that is what I took my bear with. I still have my S&W 4 inch 500 Mag though. But I think the 460 Mag will become my main hunting handgun.  :D

I had it cut down to 6 inches and an inverted muzzle crown done on it. Also had it Mag-na-ported.  :D

Does it recoil much with the porting? Are the slots on the top of the barrel so the gases push the barrel down? :D

There are 4 slots cut on the side of the barrel close to the top. The gun still rolls in your hand like the single actions do. Not as much of a sting in the palm of the hand like the S&W500.  :D

What I am waiting on is the Performance center 460 in the Hunter version:

6.5" barrel

Black stainless finish

I have seen em in 500 but not the 460 yet, waiting patiently.

There are a few Lew Horton 460's out there in limited numbers 1 of 500.

6.5" barrel

Stainless

Nikon red dot scope

Very sweet but they have a price of around 1500.00
