Open Breech Detonation
« on: July 20, 2005, 10:16:21 AM »
I had an open breech detonation while shooting my Mossberg bolt action 12 gauge. Its a Mossberg made for Western Auto,,a Revolation.
Simple box magazine fed.
Only put a wee scar on my nose. I'm very lucky without a doubt.
Any similar problems? Anyone hear of a similar problem any where else?

I've never had such a thing happen but have had throat blowouts with 1911 colts..  How did the accident happen with a bolt gun?  A hang fire that went off late?

My best guess is this.
Its striker fired and everything is on a bigger scale than I'm used to w/bolt rifles.
The bolt can turn too far when its open all the way. I think I had it turned to far and the bottom of the striker that engages the sear hit the side of the reciever causing the striker to fall as I closed the bolt.
That my best guess atleast.

I'd bet that was interesting.  luckily if the round wasn't supported by the chamber there wasn't a lot of pressure developed.Far more dangerous are the AD's where the round was confined but the bolt not locked..  Bolt velocity and fragmentation of the case can be very dangerous...  As long as the guns pointed in a dafe direction at least we minimize the damage.  Hope all is well with YOU...  and thanks for a reality check.  We all need to remember dafety first!
