Sizing 30-30 Cases - What do you folks do?
« on: February 22, 2003, 08:59:09 AM »
Just bought a 30-30 barrel and looking for a die set.  For bottle neck cases I usually buy a Redding Deluxe Set that comes with the neck sizing die since this is cheaper than buying seperate.  Having trouble finding one in stock somewhere and am trying to decide what to do.

Do most of you folks neck size only, full length size or just bump the shoulder back with the full length die with the 30-30.  I know it all depends on which method gives you the best fit for your gun, but what are most of you doing that gives that correct fit with your gun.  I would think with a rimmed case you would not want to neck size only, but some manuals say to for a 30-30 contender so it headspaces on the neck and I neck size only my 22 hornet with good luck.

Thanks for the input all.

I full lenght size mine. I have a few different 30-30s and use the same prepreped brass for what ever I decide to shoot.  I use different bullets, some spire point amd some flat. I figure the factory barrels were chambered for off the shelf ammo not varmint MOA accuracy.
I think with a little extra work accuracy for one perticular gun could be inhanced.  In high power ammo to resize .002 under chamber size, neck turn and trim brass.

I load 30-30 for a Lever not a single shot but I adjusted my die so that the neck was sized and the body was sized just to the point where it would rechamber with no extra effort. Reduces the amount of brass working from what I've read. Sean

I would recommend forgetting about the neck die.
You can resize to just bump the shoulder with the FL die. This will assure that any case you resize will fit your chamber even if it is range brass.
You might start out by finding some range or freebee brass that will not fit
your chamber and adjust your die until it will just chamber. This way if you goof and kill a piece of brass it is not your best stuff.  After setting the die test by checking the fit of about 4 or 5 and reset if necessary. I like to pull the case part of the way out of the sizing die and rotate 1/2 turn then resize again. This tends to straighten the case if it has a banana shape and it also provides more a more precise head space since the 2nd pass only has to move the neck slightly.
