how many of you crow hunt ?
« on: July 21, 2005, 10:24:44 AM »
Maryland's crows season starts 15 Aug 2005 and I can't wait !!!  I know I know its not the same a Dove or goose season but its been a long off season and I just looking forward to getting some wing shooting in.  I've ripped (with the help of a computer geek) a whole bunch of crow calls to my MP3 player and I bought a battery powered horn speaker that plugs into the headset jack of the MP3.  It seems to work pretty in my back yard.  Can't wait to try it out.  I plan on using the NEF 12ga with the pollychoke encase the shooting stitution changes as I'm hunting.  I have a 40+ acres cut wheat field to hunt.

I've thought of hunting them when they are over head crowing at me when I am out deer hunting...They are almost as annoying as the squirrels are.

Went out to my hunting field,  Didn't take a gun with me ( As avised by the Gf) sit in the wood line of the field and tested my MP3 player. ( and a cheese pizza thrown out in front of my spot) The feeding call really work great!!!  once one of the winged rats hit the spot he did all the calling.  I stayed back in the trees and didn't make my self noticed.  Man I can't wait until the season opens.

Ok finally first day of hunting season here in Maryland.  Left work a little early today.  Set up on my hunting field.  Put out several crow decoys and a hawk decoy.  Starting my MP3 player playing a hawk crow fight.  It didn't take long to get the crows in the area coming in.  I shot for about an hour and killed 6 not bad for the first day.  And get this my GF  stopped by and checked my hunting licenes.  Man wait until we go out next.  But hey she can search me any time she wants.  Life is good.  Please do not  forget to remember our troops in harms way.  They are fighting the good fight for us!

I never knew there was a crow season.  I check the MN DNR and sure enough, 3/1-3/31 then 7/15-10/15.  NO LIMIT!
So, what size shotgun/rifle for crow hunting.  Sounds like great fun and a good way to get in some practice.  Do you have to call'em in or can you just bait for them, ie:Pizza.  TELL ME MORE...PLEASE!

Hey cookieman,

Well some use a varmit rifle and shoot them at long distance.  I myself use a 12 ga.  and shoot them on the wing gets me warmed up for dove season.
I shoot 71/2 or 6 shot with a mod choke.  I have a home made electronic caller.... A MP3 player hook to a battery operated speaker.  I have been known to throw out a cheap pizza too.but shhhhh that illegal here in Maryland.
Hope this helps

Dave, I also pray for our men and women stationed overseas.

In addition, good crow hunting to all.

Prayers to our fighting men and women.

Yeah, I wondered about that, too.  I mean, I have never seen anything eat crow.  Especially not people.  The meat would have to taste pretty nasty, if you consider what they feed on.  Good example, ever taste meat from a "Swamp Buck".  It's pretty strong!!
So, like Marcus said "What DO you do with the crows"?

When I was a kid some of the old timers talked about eating them. I'm sure during the depression they were eaten. I know I remember this coming up before and some one posted recipes.Maybe us folks out east that can't make it to the PD shoot could get together for a crow hunt? With a big crow bar-b-Q after.

This year I am turning all the crow I kill over to the State of Maryland's West Nile virus detection program so all of them can be tested.

Crow hunting is pretty fun, i use my .223 handi for the shots off the deck when i can't sneak up any closer, but when I'm trying to take down a bunch of them I use my rem. 870 super mag express with mod, choke in it, and any shot size from 7 1/2 to 9...it does the trick pretty good when you are up close...
