.35 caliber twist rates

Hi guys,

I was wondering what the ideal twist rate is for a .35 caliber rifle.

Marlin uses 1:16" for their .35 rem
Remington uses 1:16" in the 700CDL (and I assume their 7600)
My ER Shaw barrel has a 1:14"
Browning BLR has a 1:12"

I know that the general rule of thumb is that faster twists stabilize longer (heavier) bullets.  My whelen (1:14") shoots 200, 225 and 250 grainers well.  

Is there a preferred twist rates rate for all .35's or does the preferred rate change with individual chamberings?  Can anyone tell me what the twist rates are for the .358 Norma or .358 STA?

Does anybody know if there is an ideal bullet weight for each twist rate?

The rate of twist for about any rifle is dependent on the rpm of the bullet and the bullet length.   For maximum accuracy a slower twist rate might be very slightly preferable, but on a hunting rifle I prefer to be over-stabilized rather than under-stabilized.  With the former the bullet is more likely to penetrate an animal without tumbling - and this is what I want.

The .35 Whelen I am building has a Shilen Match Grade 25" 1-14" twist and the Remington M700 BDL .350 Remington Magnum(1969 era) has a 1-14" twist too(just measured it the other night).  These are the only two .358 calibers I own or have access to.  Lawdog

Winchester specifies a 1 - 12" twist for their .358 cartridge.

As stated the 1 in 16" seems to work well from the little .35 Rem. to the Whelen and .350 Mag. I think the main reason for it is folks using the light weight pistol bullets tho. They want to be sure those are stabilized but not "over" stabilized if pushed too hard.

I really think a 1 in 14" would be near ideal without running the formula for twist rates. If all you were gonna use is 200s to 250s even the 1 in 12" would do fine but those tiny little pistol bullets might get to spinning too fast and come apart if pushed hard.
