I am looking into a single shot in 25-06 that will be used as a ranch gun for predator and vermin control. I will spend under $1,000 hopefully under $750 and dont want to spend alot of time setting up the gun for accuracy. Which leads to the question, what is the most accuracy single shot out of the box for under $1,000?

I'd go for the Ruger #1 myself. You might find a like new Browning in that caliber too.

Ruger #1 by a mile. Accurate, easy to customize, Rugged easy to take apart and fix.

DougK.....I assume you mean single shot break action or falling block.
However if you want out of the box accuracy single shot, for less then $1000 then a single shot rifle made by Cooper Arms of Montana is your Gun. I have a friend, who works at gun shop, talked the owner into being a Cooper dealer, you have to buy 4 or 5 a year, anyways he owns five (17hmr,22br,222rem,6mmppc and 6.5x284) not one of these gun shoot's over .5 and most shoot a lot less the 6.5x284 is shooting in .2's. He has sold 22lr/22mag's repeaters and none have shot groups over .5inches at 100 meter. If you want the most accurate single shot rifle for the under $1000 a base Cooper bolt action is your gun, MSRP is above $1000 but, out the door price on the base gun will be less then grand, not by much mind you. There maybe onezy two-zy out there Ruger or H&R that
shoot's less then .5 inch but, on average they don't. I own two Ruger #1 a B and V model a 6mm made in 1975 that shoot's .75 ,but has been worked over and the heavy 22-250 that shoot's in the .6's Yes, there are Number one's that shoot less then .5 but, they're few and far between, most Ruger #1 owners are very happy if they shoot in the .7's H&R's have a strong presence here and for grand you could buy and sell them until you got yourself a tack driver and have cash left over.
My friend has sold 14 Cooper's or 12 with 2 on order, something like that, anyway's not one hasn't been a what I call a real shooter.

For out of the box accuracy you will not beat a Handi-Rifle period. This coming from a guy that owns a 300wby mag No1

You're forgetting about the M97 made by www.eabco.com which lists for $899.00, available in a lot of calibers and very accurate.

Also, the Thompson Center line of single sot are both cheap and accurate and in a lot of calibers.

My vote goes to a Savage BVSS-S single shot. You'll have enough dough for a good scope and mounts as well.

I have to agree with quick: the handi is the way to go, mine30- 06 cost $179.00 and out of the box it will print 3 shots under 7/8 of an inch. :-D

I own a TCR, it's very accurate, and sweet to shoot. I have .338Win Mag, 7MM Mag, .35 Whelen, 30-06, .243, 22-250, and 12ga barrels.

I also own three Hand-rifles, .35 Whelen, 30-06/.223/20ga, .243/45-70/.50Cal Black Powder. I have to say, with the exception of the .223, the Handi's are just as accurate as the TCR. With the 30-06 (this barrel just got stolen, along with it's $600.00 Shepard scope), I have hit wolves at 500 (running) and 600 (standing) yards. I had it sighted in for 300 yards, and could hit a clay target everytime at 300. This gun was right out of the box, nothing done but mounting a scope.

I have had two TCRs in .30-06 and they were anything but sweet to shoot. Both booted me badly in the chops. I would rather shoot the .375 Mag in a model 700 Remington than they TCR! The guy I sold the second one to commented about the painful recoil to a mutual friend. However, they were sure pretty!

On the other hand, my Handi in .30-06 was a dream to shoot. Accurate, and that heavy barrel tamed down the recoil immensely. I may have to get me another before too long!

I have owned several sub $300 Handi's...and all would and do shoot better than any of the bolt rifles I have owned costing up to 5 times as much...my best shooter right now...is a 30-06 Ultra-Comp shooting Federal Fusion ammo...my 5 shot group size is .233" with it...my 338-06 Handi is under moa...as too my 45-70 Handi... Dollar for dollar...you can't ask for anything better...

I'd have to go with the encore. I have a stainless encore that shoots really well with all the barrels I have. 22-250, 30/06, and 209x50.

All the guns suggested are good but for the money the Thompson Contender can't be beat. The accuracy and versatility are the strong points of the gun. I've been shooting them for twenty years and have yet to be dissapointed on accuracy.
The best part is the barrel varieties. My vote goes for the TC hands down.

My experience is limited to one Ruger #1 (243Win) and a H&R 1871 Buffalo CLassic (45-70). Both are great rifles. My Ruger is consistently printing 1/2"-3/4" groups at 100yards, usually the smaller of the two. I have done nothing to the rifle besides shoot it and occassionally clean it.

The H&R 1871 BC "was" a great rifle too. I foolishly sold it, but will evantually get another.....it was just too fun to shoot. I did not test its accuracy on paper, but rather used "Kentucky Windage" to pop clays at 125-200 yards. One marking shot, then adjust and fire for effect.

Personally, within my extended price range, I don't know of a more beautiful rifle than the Ruger No 1. I have a Stainless 1-B on my wish list. They are rather pricey new, but they are fairly reasonable used. My next purchase will be a Handi-Rifle with a trip or two back to the factory for additional barrels. If you plan out a Handi-Rifle and return trips to H&R for barrel fitting, you can have the versatility of a T/C Encore/Contender at a lower cost. I recently priced a 30-06 barrel...total with labor and shipping came out to $107.....about half an Encore/Contender barrel.

Sorry encore guys, but I just can't see the justicifation in buying a switch barrel firearm when the barrels cost darn near as mutch as a complete bolt action rifle. I took advantage of a sale H&R had going on and bought a 500mag and a .357mag barrel for $180 to my door.

Dougk, there is no way you can even come close to the value and accuracy available in a H&R Handi Rifle or even better, an an H&R "Ultra". They come in many calibers and even in the 25-06 you desire. I am 61 years of age (can't believe it!!) and have been shooting 50 years or so with more than a few credits to show for it. If you do not judge value on the dollar amount you have spent but on the value recieved, get a Handi Rifle and stand proud, it's then up to you to outshoot the competitors, I know the gun is up to it, the rest is up to you....<><.... :grin:

Come on guys! Tell the truth, don't tell him what you prefer. I love the Handis & Rugers & TCs and all the rest, but the MOST accurate is a single shot bolt action. If not, why aren't the benchrest boys shootin' Handis? Out of the box there is only one choice and that is Savage. Plus a fist full of $ left over. DD

DirtyDan is right about the Savage being a fine and accurate bolt action, but the question was which 25-06 single shot was the best for his stated use and cost under $1,000.00, the answer to that is simply and clearly, the H&R Handi Rifle, or even better for a few bucks more, the H&R Ultra Rifle....<><.... :grin: :grin:

Savage bolt action being a fine and accurate bolt action is so rue.My buddie has a out of the box L/H 243 cal. that seem to give him some problems ,on that day were shooting side by side at the range,he ask me if I would like to try the gun and see if it was the gun, or his loads . lomg storie short I put 3 shots at the 100 yard target bull,all were clover leaf together.
