I see here in Ohio Gander Mt. Has 17hmr made by Winchester i belive there 17 grain . 8.99 a box. anybody used this yet ?
Think ill run out there today and pick some up see how they shoot.

More CCI produced ammo with a silver-gray tipped V-max bullet. They've been available since May....

CCI is making all of it. They just put whatever name on it the buyer wants. If you'd order enough of it from them they'd put your name on it.

"What I've found with the 17hmr ammo is that it varies in accuracy depending on lot numbers. All of the different brands of ammo are made by the same company, so one brand won't shoot better than another in a specific rifle. Also, a lot of people (me included) have said that the 17gr. bullets are more accurate on average in thier gun. If you find a lot of ammo that shoots good in your gun, go back to the store that you bought it from and buy more of it. I've had lots that shot under .75 inch 5 shot group average at 100 yards and I've had other lots that shot a little over and inch average at 100 yards, using both in the same day (so it wasn't weather or anything else that effected it)."

So provided this is true since CCI makes it all would CCI brand .17HMR perhaps be most consistant or is it universal?

Nothing new there, LS308, most rimfire ammo is just like smokeless powder, there can be subtle differences in performance between lot numbers that make a difference. I always advocate buying small quantities until you find ammo that shoots good, then buy more of the same lot number. When I got my first Hmr, I drove 80 miles round trip to get more of the same kind of ammo, Federal Vmax, only to find out it didn't shoot near as good as the first batch I bought which was no longer in stock locally. Many, many RFCers buy their ammo by lot number the same way. That said, it seems that Hornady ammo is by far the most accurate in general in most guns, and I have to agree with that, it does shoot well in 3 of my 4 hmrs even with lot variance consideration.

The federal HP shoot about the same as their kin, the CCI HP, not well in any of my hmrs, but ya need to try em all to find what works best. The CCI HP shot fairly good in my CZ452 for a while, but that changed as it broke it...You'll find the TNT/Speer HP bullets will penetrate better and not be as explosive on ground squirrels as the Vmax are. My first hunting trip was done with the TNT ammo, my kills had .22RF like holes in them compared to my friends Vmax wounds that looked like they were shot with something much bigger, gaping holes and strewn intestines with the Vmax at 100yds. Same day I made a kill at 158 laser yds, same thing, hole in and slightly bigger hole out, DRT.

Figure 150-300 rounds before the barrel is broke in if you don't lap it first.

CCI is the only manufacturer of 17hmr ammo, at their Lewiston, Idaho plant. IIRC, Federal and CCI are both owned by ATK.

so just for 100% clear mind. bullet/ammo makers send thier bullets to CCI werein CCI put them together with thier brass/primers-n-powder?

Well almost right. Since they are rimfire they have no primers, just a priming mix spun into the case along the base of rim.

I believe the only bullets being used are Hornady's and Speer's. I'd say it's highly unlikely they are using any different powder charges in making them for the different folks who want their label on them. So the only real differences are the color of the plastic tip Hornady furnishes based on what the seller wants and whether Hornady or Speer bullets are used.
