I have a chance to buy a NIB Nickle SAA 5 1/2 BBL in 38-40 3Rd (4th) Generation Colt for $1049 on sale at a local store. I have a 1892 Winchester in 38-40 and would really enjoy having a companion gun with it. I know you can get the Colt clones cheaper but this seems to be a good price on a original. They have a layaway program (good thing !) so it could be my CHRISTmas present LOL. They had several in various calibers but this is the only 38-40 and actually the only caliber I would want in one. Well .... a 44-40 could work also. : )) I had them hold it for me over the weekend so what do you guys (gals) think ? :wink:

If your Model 92 is a "real" Winchester then go for it. If it's a clone I'd just get a clone Colt.

This is just my 2 cents, you understand, but, here goes.....I think you'd be disappointed in it, all said & done. The standard in the industry has become the USFA single action. They're using retired Colt gunsmiths to re-create the 1st generation Colt SAA's, & they're doing it with a vengence! The aspect I am most impressed with is the large diameter, straight-taper cone shaped solid mount firing pin. What I'm saying is that you'd GET with the USFA what you'd be EXPECTING with the Colt, for about the same money. Actually, my FFL dealer, who is registered with USFA as a direct dealer, is getting me a USFA SAA, which retails for $1075, at $825. You might check with yours, jd45.

I have 80+,90+ and 100+year old Colts and the new ones do not come close to quality since before the war.

ill sing the praises of the usfas louder then anyone but there backlogged right now and its pretty tough to find one and one more thing to keep in mind is that if you buy a real colt for that ammount it will still be worth that ammount 5 years from now if not more. A usfa will depreciate just like any normal gun.

Thanks for the replies. I agree that the USFAS guns are top notch but, They are not a COLT. I have heard the some of the 3rd Generation guns lacked the quality that they should have had but, I have heard nothing but good news from a few people I know that have the newer 3rd (4th) gen guns.
I guess I'm looking at a firearm I feel can be passed down to my son and if he has a son(s) he could pass it on also. I went ahead and put some cash down on it today and when I pick it up sometime in the future it will be shot. I'm not into cowboy shooting and don't ever plan on doing so. Target shooting and informal plinking will be its only use.
One reason I don't ever see myself cowboy shooting in formal competion is I don't see the reason to dress up period style.
I used to shoot ISPC and didn't have to dress up like a swat team to compete.( boy I ruffled some feathers LOL)

I don't think you will be disapointed in a New Colt.

You don't have to go overboard on dressing cowboy to shoot it a local
shoots. You should go sometime if you like shooting older guns. It is
pretty amazing at times what some people bring.

A friend just took delivery of a new Colt SAA that he ordered and waited for 6 months to get. He is an excellent gunsmith and fairly evaluates firearms he owns and shoots. He thinks the Colt is outstanding in fit, finish and accuracy. It's in 38 special caliber with a 7 1/2" barrel. He says it shoots dead on at 25 yards with his standard light lead loads. His only complaint is that the trigger pull is rough, which he will fix shortly.

As to US Firearms revolvers, I have owned a US Patent Firearms revolver for 8 years and it is an excellent revolver. I then bought a new Rodeo this spring and have not been happy with it. I returned it to the company for repair the last week of May and they still have it! At this point, I cannot recommend their company any more.
