All,

I need some help here, as I will be going on an Elk hunt (New Mexico) in the fall of this year. I have 3 rifles to choose from: Rem Model 7 in 7mm-08, NEF handi 280 rem, and a Ruger #1B in 7mm Mag.

I think I want to take the 7mm Mag. due to the potential for some long shots, and it has the best optics on it (Nikon Monarch 3x9x50). However, it is not a great shooter with 100yd groups at 1.5 to 2.0 inches being normal.

Here are my questions:

Are there any good replacement stocks available for the #1? (the wood is too pretty to mess up)

What process should I undertake to accurize the rifle? (trigger has been done, it is much nicer than the lawyer trigger it came with)

Or, should I just sell the thing and get a new bolt gun for the trip?

Recall reading #1 accuracy was dependent on how the forearm was hung and found this article doing a quick search of the web.

No. 1 shooting 1.5-2.0" is durn sure "minute of elk" as far out as is resonable.  You planning on shooting him in the eye?
Take it and don't worry about it.  Lots of area on an elk to place a killing bullet.  They are still thin skinned game; not armor plated.  My No.1 7RM with Sierra 160g bullets works fine.
Friend shoots all of his with a .270Win with factory 130g bullets.

Ruger #1 Replacement Stock

I have a used Bell & Carlson (Black) synthetic stock set for a Ruger #1 that I removed from a used #1 I purchased last winter. I had it for sale on GBO but,no takers! It really is in good shape and has a black recoil pad. No sling swivel studs. If you want it, give me a call, 616-654-8609, 6AM - 4PM EST, Mon. - Fri. , $125 shipped.
