High pressure non-magnum cartridges in a Handirifle
« on: July 25, 2005, 05:18:25 AM »
I searched a bit before I posted this but couldn't find anything specific so I thought I'd ask anyway.
Since I'm seriously considering buying a .280 Rem Handi I've been asking a few questions, the main one being "Can I squeeze 3000fps out of it with a 140gn bullet?"
I started asking for suggestions about appropriate powders to do this on a reloading forum and when I mentioned the rifle model guys started asking questions about whether a Handi would encounter extraction problems at high pressures.
Now, let's keep in mind that I don't intend to go over maximum recommended loads.
In addition, Winchester and Remington both make 140gn factory ammo they claim will do 3050fps and 3000fps respectively at the muzzle(although ammo companies tend to exagerate a bit).
And, most importantly, Handis are chambered for higher pressure cartridges like the .308, .243 and 7mm-08 so maximum loads for a .280 should be safe.
What's the consensus?
Will I have extraction problems?
Is anyone here safely getting 3000fps out of a 140gn load without breaching recommended max for their .280?

The .270 Winchester is a 65K max pressure round, and available in the Handi's...  As long as you stay under that, you should be safe.

My 280 is my go anywhere, shoot anything,at any distance gun. It never fails when I put the 45 70 barrel on,I will allways have a 250 to 300 yd shot at a very large boar hog and have to pass on it. Mine likes the 150 gr. Corloks at 2975 fps. and 1.25" to 1.50" at 100 yds.The 26" barrel helps the velocity to slighty beat the 30 06 and the smaller dia. bullet helps it shoot a little flatter. The extra weight of the barrel helps in the recoil department, and is easier to hold steady on the long shots. As you have probably guessed by now I really like the 280 .  Digger

Accurate lists a max load whti 3100 powder and the 145 Speer at 59,000 psi for 2932 fps in a 24" barrel.  The 67 fps shortage you will never even notice.  Lyman is even closer with a 139-grain bullet and RL19 at 2989 for 49,500 CUP in a 24" barrel.  Again, you'll never notice any difference.
