sizer diameter for Mosin-Nagant 7.62x54 and for 7.62x39?
« on: July 25, 2005, 11:02:35 AM »
If anyone has any experience, I need to order a sizer for my 7.62X39 in a .310 bore handi-rifle, and also hoping the same daimeter sizer would work for my M-44 7.62x54.  I would apprecaite som input as to what size cast bullets work best in these bores.  Thanks.

Lotsa luck!
Lee has sizers in .308, .309. .311 and .314, cast bullets usually do best at .001-.002 over groove size.
Commie milsurps are all over the place. I have a M44 with a .314 groove, a friend has one with .316, another has one with .310..
Might check your handi too, my .308 Win. barrel measures .3093.
I called H&R about their barrel dimensions, they have a tolerance of +- .002".
The Lee sizers can easily be opened up with a piece of wood dowel, split the end, insert some wet or dry, 240 would do, chuck it in a drill motor and spin until the size is what you need.

You need to slug your bore to see what your diameter is, and buy a sizer die according to that.  The 2 MNs I'm shooting cast bullets in measure around .313" so I size using a .314 die.

Simply push a fishing sinker that is slightly larger than your bore through the barrel and measure it to determine the diameter.

MNs are a ton of fun to shoot with cast 'boolits'.

Robert, I would order the .312 and be done with it. The Mosin Nagants that I have are tight in the neck area of the chamber so I can't use a bullet larger than .312 no matter what the barrel slugs out as. As I recall it took about 2-3 weeks to get the sizer from Lee. I think it cost $25.

Yes, I am thinking of getting the Lee .312 too.  I will mostly be using it for the 7.62x39, but I am sure that it will work good enough for my M-44 with a good lube and gas-check with modest loads. Thanks Guys.
