G2 or Encore 223?
« on: July 25, 2005, 12:49:25 PM »
I'm ready to take the leap into the G2/Encore family and am considering a G2 in .22 and 17HMR and the Encore in 223 and 7-08. What is the forum's opinion on whether I should get the G2 or Encore 223 for walk around varmint. light deer shooting. Any accuracy issues of one over the other?

ENCORE!
You will invariably want to increase your collection of barrels (Everyone does), and with an Encore you can move upward. G2's are somewhat limited to the standard old Contender calibers. At least for factory barrels, anyway.

Just my opinion, but I think the G2 might have solved a problem with accessory calibers that were a little overbore and causing some early wear on the old Contender frame. It had it's limits.

I have a Contender with a Super 16inch barrel set up as a carbine, total overall length is 30inches and less than 5 pounds with scope. I also own an Encore with a 24inch barrel.  If I'm walking it's the Contender I grab if I'm stationary I'll take the Encore.  Ya just have to work up loads for each gun/barrel combination.

I would choose the G2 if you plan on using it for Rimfires, .223's, and light deer calibers...if you want magnums, or think you need bigger calibers at some point, go with the Encore, as long as you dont mind the extra weight.

Calibers like the 7x30 Waters in a G2 are fine for deer out to 250 or so, and thats about as far as i ever shoot anyway, no matter what caliber i am carrying, since i usually hunt areas where i cant see over 100 yards...if you do plan on using that gun to go chase elk or something big, guess the Encore would make more sense...

I just upgraded my Contender to a G2, like it a lot better than old frame. Already had a 14"223, 14" 45-70, 14" 357 Maxium and a 45/410 barrel. Getting 1" groups with 223 barrel and G2. Have just got an Encore 15" 7mm-08, getting 1/2 to 1" groups with it. Have Burris 2x on it and a Burris 3x with AO on the 223. Shooting my pistols better than my rifles lately???
