Stingray in 22 or 25?
« on: July 26, 2005, 02:15:32 AM »
Need some help! The rats have discovered my feeder so I have been taking them out with a Avanti 853 (.17). I like the gun, it is quiet and accurate. The problem is unless I make a head or spine shot the rat runs a short distance to the bushes and gets away. Now to my question, I am looking at a Stingray in either .22(720fps) or .25(620fps) in hopes of anchoring a rat on the spot. Which one do you guys think would serve my purpose. Also would one be louder than the other. Thanks in advance.

If you are referring to the Webley Stingray, either one would be ok.  You might also look at the Xocet. Its pretty much the same gun as the Stingray, except theres no safety and the price tag is $60 less.
The quoted velocites are a bit optimistic though. In .22, expect 620 or so, maybe 580 in .25. 620 is more than enough for rats at 20 yards or less.  Neither the .22 or .25 is terribly loud, the .25 should be a bit quieter though.

"dave" pretty much nailed it.  Comparing my .25's to my .22's(both spring and PCP’s) the muzzle blast has more of a "pop" sound to them.  The real problem is finding pellets for a .25.  I order all mine from Pyramyd Air as finding any locally is all but impossible.  If you want more power in either the .22 or .25 check out a RWS 48.  Lawdog

One more question, for urban pest control. Carbine or full length rifle, keeping in mind the noise factor. thanks guys.

The difference is minimal, cosmetic at best. I like the shorter carbine Xocet, it balances very nicely with a small scope and muzzle brake. The shorter barrel length doesn't affect power noticeably, and at this power level noise is not really an issue with either the long or short barrel.

"dave" is right again.  Mainly it's personal preference.  Me, I don’t care for carbine anything.  Give me a longer barrel.  Lawdog
