I need advice. just last night I found rust in my bbl. about 5" from the muzzle, a spot about as big as an pencil eraser. I have never had rust in a bbl before and I don't know where this came from. I soaked for about an hour with regular nitro solvent, and then swabbed it with iosso paste about 30 strokes, STILL THERE! I am a clean freak about my guns and cannot figure out how I got rust. My routine is usually 1. butch's bore shine, 2. hoppes #9, 3. Iosso paste, 4. #9 to flush it out, 5. oily patch. I need the rust out and no more in.

Whatcha using for a rust preventative after you clean?? I highly recommend Eezox....

I'm not sure exactly what to do but you could try to lap the barrel with Flitz on an oversize boremop.

Drew is right, if iosso is no more abrasive than JB, I would try flitz or a fine metal polish which is a bit more abrasive but won't harm the bore. I also think I would lap the entire bore so it remains consistent throughout its length, at least out to that spot, not just in that one spot. MAke sure you use a good bore guide to protect the muzzle or throat, depending on which end you work from.

Clean and shoot several cycles and don't be surprised if the jacketed bullet accuracy isn't damaged but the cast bullet accuracy is. I don't think you'll find that regular JB removes any measurable amount of steel as pointed out in an interesting article in the latest Precision Shooting. Try JB Bore Brite. Hope for the best.
Now, how to prevent rust in the future is a different question. All you said was that the last step in your cleaning process has been "oily patch." There are lots of oils with excellent lubricating properties but little or no rust prevention additives. Even those with good protective ingredients need to be replenished regularly, every few months in a humid climate if the gun isn't being shot and cleaned. I've used Breakfree for exteriors and Kroil as the last "oily patch" after barrel cleaning and I'm probably skating on thin ice as I doubt that Kroil is formulated as a rust protectant. Some folks tell us not to put Breakfree in barrels because it contains Teflon. RIG grease is heavy and messy though great for long-term storage. I guess I'll just keep using Kroil and repatching every couple of months but it is a tough question. Maybe I'll give Eezox a try. Corrosion-X gets good reviews. Keep the suggestions coming.

ajj, if you read the test at the link below, you'll think twice about using kroil in the bore as a rust preventative, it ranked as unsatisfactory, along with Militec1 and Arms Cote . I've been using Eezox for about 15yrs, it does indeed provide protection for months and even years at a time since I've used it in muzzleloader bores that I seldom shoot and have no rust in those bores that were cleaned and put away for a looong time. It doesn't evaporate as do regular oils over time, instead it dries to a protective coating that doesn't attract dust yet provides the best protection one could ask for. I live in Washngton state and conditions here during hunting season are about as good a test of a rust preventative as you could find and the Eezox passes the test without a doubt.

Kroil is a solvent-based oil and is basicly penetrating oil. It works great mixed with Shooter's choice copper solvent as a bore cleaner but is worthless as a rust preventative.

The oil I use is outers, and I usually swab it through on a well saturated bore mop, then push a tight oily patch through to get out the excess. The crazy thing is, I got my rifle out about a month ago just to wipe it down and oil the bore, and It was slick as glass. The weather here in Arkansas has been anything but humid, driest summer I've seen in a while. I hunt in the rain, and muck all season, and have never had this happen. The only possibility I can even remotely consider, and it may be a stretch, is that during the winter I was polishing and bluing a hatchet head, I had my oil next to the sink where I was cleaning and degreasing the metal, some water may have gotten in the open bottle, and subsequently been applied to my barrel. Like I said a stretch, but maybe???

JPH, I was just thinkin that!!! I remember a long time ago when I was just a kid, my dad used to say something about just shootin rust out of the barrel, that was his fix!!! :eek:
