Seeing that they are growing in popularity, I was curious as to if anyone has ever mounted a scout scope mount on a Handi before?
A lot of trouble, accuracy jeapordized, more cost to drill and tap(if even possible), etc...I personally don't see the real need to, but it's always cool to throw up new ideas

It is possible. I was gonna have it done on my 44 mag. but i decided against it. Here's some pics to give you and idea. The screws that hold the base on are the same diameter as the the screw that holds the rear sight on. That's all i had it attached with in the pics.

Hummm...pretty interesting. Did you have it drilled and tapped, or did you do it your self?

These are some pics as it was in the early stages of developement. The base is a weaver but was cut down and i drilled the other 2 holes back in. In the pics i only had it mounted with one screw from the base. The screw that holds the rear sight on is the same thread pattern as the ones that hold the base on.
I was gonna have it tapped but i'm not sure if i'm going to now. The base is now just long enough that it rests COMPLETELY on the chamber. No over hang like all the other bases.

The only thing that's holdin me back is that i want to put the red dot on it. I have never seen a scout mount setup with a red dot.

Also if i mount it there the space over the chamber will have to be reblued. Honestly it took me almost an hour and a half to get the base off of it when i first decided to cut it down. Some one had used red lock tite on the screws. And where they had applied too much, when tightened down the excess ran under the base and ate the bluing away.

Well-there goes the "new" idea. I suppose there is only so much you can come up with with our little humble single shot. But a nice base for modifycations, I might add.
I have yet to really use a scout mounted rifle yet, but I don't really see the point. I mean why not just use open sights. It seem like too much going on out in front of you in order to consentrate good. Not only pereferial vision, but trying look directly in a scope at the same time and then try to steady a shot with small bouncing crosshairs-that is if used off hand.
I'm not knocking it, I guess I just don't get it. Thats all. :?

That's what i thought about the pistol scope i tryed. There was no field of view and it took me forever to acquire the cross hairs. Then any little movement would make the the cross hairs move. That's why i thought about the red dot scope.

Would you get alot of muzzle flash from a 17 in. 44 mag/445 supermag barrel?

I taped a red dot on my levergun like that to see and it gets on target very quick. I just can't make myself drill the receiver on my 375 BB Win to make it work. Oh well.

Rifle mag did an article on the scout setup and the author claimed very fast target acquisition, but I have my doubts with a std type scope. The red dot has a much larger viewing area and paralax is not as much an issue.
