In the next week or so I'll be ordering a 308 Win. bbl for my Encore. I'm planning to shoot Remington Corelokt ammo out of it for this hunting season.

Remington markets a lower grade ammo under the UMC brand name. I was thinking of buying a few boxes of UMC to break the barrel in. Then get it ready for deer season using the Corelokts. I will be saving the brass and handloading when I accumulated enough brass. Can anyone tell me if the brass used in the UMC cartridges is of equal quality than the brass used in the Corelokts?

No clue but you could alway call Remington.

If it was me I would order a bag of 100 or hower many you think you want and go from there.

But thats me.

I ordered 500 in 223 for my H&R with the bullets and never looked back.

I'll volunteer that it is highly unlikely that Remington makes more than one grade of .308. If you mean that you don't handload now but plan to start before deer season may I suggest that you take the leap as soon as possible and break in the barrel while you work up your hunting loads? It's not hard to get set up. You'll save time and money. Core-lokts are not expensive. One of the best sources of Remington components is www.blue-star-inc.com

Ditto what AJ said. The difference in price between Core-Lokt and UMC is not all that great to warrant using different ammo for break-in and then have to resight for another bullet weight. Given the capital cost of tooling, I'd have to agree that all of Rem's 308 cases come off of the same line.

I have used 30-06 blank cases (later found out it wasn't safe) and different brands of brass for my 760 pump. It didn't really matter. Accuracy was about the same especially for hunting.
