Lets say you have two scopes made by the same manufacturer and they are identical except that one is a 2x7x32 and the other is a 3x12x44.
Of course the later of the two is going to be better suited for longer shots but my question is this; will 2x7x32 be a LOT better for closer ranges or will they both be about the same. I would like to have the more powerful one but am concerned about those shots that are up close and afraid it would not focus at say 20 feet.

Hi Bowtied,

I have a TFAR 3-12x44 AO scope on my Hornet for 8 months now, and am very pleased with its clarity and focusing down to 10 yrd, even at 12x. For the paid price of $63.96, I believe it's a great value and have found it to be a better scope (clearer and sharper focusing) than a Leapers AccuShot 4-16x50 AOIR that's atop of my Domin8or. I don't know if either of'em may sustain the pounding of a magnum springer, mine are on PCP's.

Mainly it's personal preference. I prefer the higher power. Most of the scopes on my air rifles(and powder burners too) are 4-16X 40 to 44mm. A few of my air rifles even have 6-18 or 6-24 powered scopes. One even wears a 8-32x 44mm Burris that has been discontinued. I want to be able to see what sex the flea is that is crawling on the Ground Squirrels eye lid at 50 yards. Lawdog

If it has adjustable focus, just check what it can focus to.
I think the field of view will be slightly more on the lower powered scope even at the same setting, but I doubt if its significant.
I have a 2x7x32 on a springer that suites me. At about 40 yds when aiming at squirrels I sometimes wish it had a little more power, but I can still hit them out to past that.
All of my scopes on rifles & pistols are lower powered-7x max.
For the shooting I do it's fine.
I should get a higher powered scope once just to see the difference.

OOPS!
I just re-read the description on the Tech Force scope and saw that it DOES have the adjustable objective that allows it to focus well at close ranges. It says that they can be adjusted to be clear at 7.5 yards and then out to infinity. Looks like I'll have to get the super-duper high power one now :lol:
Guess I should read closer next time!
