Refinishing the stock on a BDL
« on: July 28, 2005, 12:19:14 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has refinished the stock on their BDL to replace the high gloss finish with a low gloss finish?  Anything particular to pay attention to or to look out for when doing this?  Thanks.

I removed the shiny finish and re-dune it with min-wax spray urathene in satin finish, just be real careful around the checkering and to take your time, use 4 oooo steel wool between coats and again dont get into  any hurry, good luck Ive done several. :D    JIM

I have done a bunch and it's not too difficult.  Remove the existing finish with heat and scrappers.  Apply your finish of choice by hand.  If you wish poly use the rub on poly and multiple coats.  If using oil, my preference, use TruOil and 0000 wool between coats..  Finish either with wax over a lightly (0000) steel wooled surface to produce the desired sheen.

PS>clean the finish(either poly or oil) off your hands with 'Skin-So-Soft'.  Mix it 50/50 with tap water and shake and rub onto hands, then finish wasing using any brand soft soap.  The stuff comes off the hands without cracking the skin or cuticles.

Plus you gotta remember the main ingrediant in most strippers is a powerful base, something akin to lye..  This is in a water based solution and if it soaks into the wood may create the same kind of problems Browning had with their 'salt wood' guns..  Heat and a scraper is the quickest and least damaging way to strip the Remnigton RKW finish... and in actuality, most finishes!
