All,

I am thinking ahead to a rifle my three little ones can use to take their first deer(s). I have been looking around on the net, and have been very impressed with the ballistics of the little 7-30 waters. I do not currently own a contender, but I have used an old style contender pistol in this caliber to harvest two Mississippi whitetails. One I shot at 167 long steps, my best ever pistol shot! The round performed great on our smallish MS deer.

Here is my question, would a new style contender carbine with the youth stocks be a good starter rifle for 3 little ones? Anyone got a better suggestion? Anyone know what kind recoil will be present in this set-up?

Also, is there another calibler I should be looking at? (i.e., 243 win, 257 roberts, 260 rem, 30-30 win). What gives me the best overall deer performance, with as little recoil as possible.

I want to start my little ones out right with a gun that will not make them hate to shoot.

PS - I am a liitle biased toward 7 mm's, as I currently own a 7mm-08, 280 rem, and a 7mm-Mag.

I have a 7-30 Waters contender carbine. I set it up for my wife to use for deer hunting. My sons have since taken it over for their deer hunting. It is a super combination of power and portability. Perfect for kids or adults for that matter. It kicks a little due to its light weight. I start the kids out with light handloads and progressively work up. A bipod is indispensable for kids. I use a versa-pod, and am happy with it. My son killed a mulie spike with this combo when he was ten. My youngest is taking it for whitetail this October. There will be guys telling you that what you really need is a N.E.F. Handi rifle but, life is to short to hunt with a ugly rifle.

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me what barrel you have on yours, and where it came from? Would I be better off with the new G2 contender frame on the carbine? I may go with a little heavier barrel to add some weight to the rifle. This added weight, a mercury recoil reducer, and a nice rubber recoil pad should help alot in the recoil department.

What are your thoughts?

Check with Ed of Ed's Contenders. (405) 879-0879. I think he has 7-30 Waters barrels in 24" non tapered barrels. I think the ones he has are stainless. He would be the best place to start a search for a carbine barrel in this caliber. Might save you some time to not have to order one custom.

Thanks for the phone number, but I don't have a frame either. I will have to buy a complete gun, or buy a frame and then the barrel.

My barrel is a TC 21" and tapered. My stock is the rylite one and is very light. I believe that a walnut stock with a recoil pad would make a substantial differance. My frame is not a G2, either one should do fine. I did my own trigger job and amazed myself, it is sweet. Have you concidered gettiing a 22 barrel so that the kids can practice with the same rifle but no recoil.
You are going to have more fun teaching your kids to hunt than you could imagine. I LOVE to hunt but enjoy hunting with my boys even more.

i have a 7-30 last version g1 frame with a stainless 21" bbl in a Fajen laminated stock set.. with ear muffs you can barely tell when it goes off..i load sierra 100gr hpts to use in the summer and 140 sierra flat bases for deer & hogs..I think it's the perfect contender calaber..

I have both original Contenders and a G2. If I were buying a gun for 'the little ones' I would go with the G2 frame as they will have trouble opening and using an original frame. The geometry on a G2 makes opening....thus safely using one...far easier. Excellent choice of caliber tho........
