Can I use a .44mag or .357mag bbl on a Pardner?
« on: July 29, 2005, 04:49:47 PM »
I have 12 guage survivor, If I get my hands on a .44mag or .357 bbl will it fit?

Will it be safe?

I kinda have a hunch NEF won't fit it as part of the bbl program.......but there are ways around that.

*edited to include .357

No, H&R won't fit any rifle caliber barrel to an SB1 shotgun frame. There are those here that shoot the 357mag and 22 Hornet on SB1 frames, but they both have smaller case heads but about the same pressure as the 44mag. Then you have the problem of getting it fitted, they aren't one size fits all, it might fit, may not...

The .357 would be cool.

If a .357 fits on to SB1 frame it will be safe?

I can't say for sure, I'd wait for some opinions by those that may have done it. I've shot my 357 maxi barrel on an SB1 Topper frame, had perforated primers, not good, shot ok, but scary. The SB1 frames have a larger hole around the firing pin and will allow the primer to flow back into the frame which isn't good. It could just be an issue with the lighter pistol primers that changing primers would fix......dunno for sure!

My .357 barrel and .45-70 barrel are both on SB1 receivers (Tim, the Hornet is now on a SB2).  I don't have any problems with either one, but that doesn't mean it is the best way to do things.

If there is any inkling of an idea the receiver is stretching, it can be monitored with barrel to receiver measurements on a regular basis.  If it doesn't take a thicker feeler gauge in that gap, it isn't stretching.  By the same token, I wouldn't use a SB1 or SB2 that has more than .003" barrel to receiver gap without the forearm installed (the forearm spacer can move the barrel, but it's usually made out of plastic and sure won't stand much pressure!).

The best situation is to go ahead and get a SB2 so you can put whatever you want on it.

I haven't put a mic on the firing pin hole, but the diameter of the hole shouldn't make any difference.  The length of the firing pin, the load being used and the strength of the primer are bigger concerns on perferations.  I guess that's one reason I normally use CCI primers.

Tim,

Actually, one of those is on a H&R "AU" frame that probably predates the SB1.

I have my eye on a 12 gauge that has synthetic stocks and a blued "NR" receiver.  The ragged out barrel doesn't look like it goes with the receiver, but I don't know if the Pardners were ever made in blue.  I normally look at the triggers first and this one has a pretty nice trigger.   If I knew it was a SB2, it would be home with me now!
