Ontario Moose Draw
« on: July 30, 2005, 02:00:53 PM »
I thought I'd start this thread up for those of us that hunt Canada's southern province to let everyone else know how the moose draw went for us and our hunting groups.

As of monday we're supposed to be able to call the MNR's number to find out how we did, so the results should be coming soon.  Monday's a holiday here in Ontario, so I expect the switchboards to be jammed for a while.

I'm part of two groups.  One is a bowhunting group for zone 24 up by Kapuskasing where we have a 3 man pool 1 group that applied for a bull, and I'm in the two man pool 2 group that applied for a cow.

My firearms group applied individually for bull tags in zone 47 (Parry Sound).  We had about 8 pool 1 applicants, but I expect the odds will be about 26:1 against, so its likely a few of us will be calf hunting this year as well.

Good Luck Everyone!!! :D

The results are now on-line.

The other guy in my pool 2 group of two application for a cow tag in zone 24 got a tag.  This leaves the results from the bull group (3 pool 1 applicants where 5 was the guaranteed tag number) and my gun group in zone 47 still to come.

In case you don't have it, the number is 1-800-288-1155.  You need your outdoors card number to find out your results.

Well, I'm closing on 15 years with no tag, but one of our guys drew a bull tag, so we're good to go!
Quite the system isn't it? My cousin has drawn twice in the last ten years, and the guy that just drew, has drawn three times. Me, I'm still at Zero for 14. :(

It's really tough for firearms hunters.  When the draw system was first put in place I got an archery tag on my third choice.  I then went 13 years without a gun tag with one surplus cow archey tag thrown in.  I was then drawn twice in three years and have been shut out since.

In that time I received several archery tags, many of them surplus tags and a few drawn - at least two were when I was in pool two.

My archery hunts have normally been with two adult tags in camp, only once did we have to go for cows and calves.  However, the chances of success are very low for this type of hunt.  My gangs have yet to connect on an archery moose - but we've always had a great time :D  .  Hopefully we'll break the mould this year.

If someone had an archery bull tag in zone 24 this year a member of his party could get one of the surplus cow tags available in that zone this season.  This contrasts with my gun area where the odds of getting a bull tag are about 27:1.
