« on: July 31, 2005, 05:12:10 AM »
A friend drew a tag in a special unit for Sept. But, we don"T know what the ML regs. are. Can you use an inline ? Open sights or scope ? loose powder or pellets ? sabots or maxi-balls. Reccomended bullet for .50 cal for elk ? Anything else you can think of ? I will check back after church today. Thanks

As I recall you will need a 50 cal or larger and pellets are not allowed.

Country Boy,

In Colorado you can not use a scope, pellets, or sabots.  No Smokeless powder either.  You can use peep sights, 209 primers in any configuration, and inlines.  Powerbelts are legal.

Choose a larger bullet (295-460 grain) .  Accuracy out of your rifle is the most important thing.  Bullet length can not exceed twice the caliber (a 460 grain No Excuses is legal and will knock the socks off of an elk).  You must use 50 caliber or larger for elk.

Have fun, They are out there, I saw them today.

We are trying to keep muzzleloading somewhat primitve.  If you want to use all the bells and whistles you can still do that only you have to hunt in one of the rifle seasons.

It's all about getting close.

Like the Beanman said, try the 460 NE, and also try the Hornady 410 with a MMP Sub-base. I don't like the hollow points, cause you need penitration, not expansion.

Tip..........use a wad under your lead base bullets, it will keep the gases from cutting the base of the bullet.
