Does anyone have a handi in 450 marlin ? If so how does it shoot ?

I saw it was still listed on their web site and thought it would be something diffrent .

NEED INPUT !!!!!!!!!!  :-D  :-D

I had one but i got rid of it. I really didn't shoot it. i shot about a box of shells through it. I got about an 1 1/2 at 100 yards. It was a spur of the moment buy and i realized i didn't need anything that big. if you get  one you want be dissappointed.

Since this topic is the 450 Marlin, I have a few questions:
Before I get inquisitive, I know of a 450 at a local outfitters I believe
they want 255 and change for it, now my questions.

What rechamberings could be done with the 450?

Could this one handle the 458 Winmag?

How hot could the 450 be loaded?

I know there is an endless number of barrels to choose from and I have
a few in mind, which the reciever will be sent back to get a 280, and
a 500. Since I have a 45/70 I won't need the 450 the only thing is to buy the rifle from the outfitters who are a little pricey on it.

Mr Frosty, If you already have a 45-70, the 450 Marlin offers no advantages other than more expensive brass and ammo. The 45-70 top pressures for ruger #1 loads are 50kcup, the 450 Marlin loads are maxed at 42.6kcup. For example, the Hodgdon annual shows the max load for the 300gr Nosler partition as 53gr of H4198 for 2321fps out of a 24" barrel. I'm already using more than that in my 45-70 with the same bullet for a velocity of over 2400fps out of a 22" barrel. If you want the performance of the 450 Marlin, you already can have it with your 45-70, but if you just want a 450 Marlin, go for it!! :wink: If you don't handload, there are very limited choices in factory ammo for the 450 Marlin, though....

the biggest reason for me buying the 450 is just for the gun itself
the 450 barrel would most likely be sold and the frame would be sent to
H&R for a new one. I was just mainly curious in what could be done with the 450.

$255 is pretty steep for a standard Handi, the frame is the same on any late model SB2 rifle, the 450 Marlin isn't a special frame if that's your thought. You should be able to find a used Handi for around $150, or new one from Walmart for $200-215. Just make sure the frame serial number shows it to be made 1999 or later for the high pressure * barrels.

thats what i know since you can get a new handi at wally world for less
than 200 and it is the 500 if they can find one.

If you really want a .500, I'd buy a Handi in whatever other caliber you want and/or send the/a frame in for a barrel, you'll probably get it much sooner.

You are right concerning the 450 not having any real advantages over the 45-70. That being said, I have one & the reason why is I was able to trade some 7.62X39 ammo & a little cash for a new one. I have 2 frames now & soon I will have a third frame. I have 3 sons & I will hopefully soon
have a big bore for each, one will be in 45-70 & another in 444 or 405,
whichever I can come up with or have made. Each frame will have a longer range round, one is now a 25-06, probably the other 2 will be 280 & 270. I will have a varmit caliber for each also, plus 1 or 2 more barrels
thrown in like 308 or 7-08.  This way I can get alot of quality shooting & tweaking in & at the same time give them handi's of equal utility. Then
Lord willing, I will have 1 more frame bought to keep for myself. I am
doing the same thing with some quality bolt rifles & handguns.

Anyway, back to this 450 H&R. I mounted a 2.8x10 Aetec because of the
eye relief & this guns shoots great without any mod's, at least for a big
bore. It is shooting 3 shot groups of 1" to 1&1/4" at 100 yards with the
factory load. I feel the factory load or the only slightly slower PMC 350 GR
load is perfect for bigger North American game at .450 Marlin Yardages &
sense I will not be shooting it much, the ammo cost is not a big deal.
They installed a steel rod in the buttstock which I will remove. I have
installed a slip-on pad over the recoil pad (I have long arms) & the rod
is not needed.

I do feel the .450 Marlin does have a niche & that is in bolt guns & the
Browning Lever gun. The case has the proper rim for these guns & due
to the fact that they are designed for Magnum pressures this case can
then be loaded quite warm!

If I weren't handloading, I'd shoot the PMC 350gr load, it's a nice round and at $20 a box, very affordable for a +P load. I shot the better part of a box before I became enamored with handloading. Zeroed 3" high at 100yds, I was about 5" low at 200yds and had a nice 2½" group.

When I get the 45-70 barrel, I will probably load 300 Gr. bullets to hunt
hunt Whitetails in the thickets on our place, our shorter range stands.

But I sometimes hunt a place a little deeper in the Ozarks where Hogs,
Bear & Mature White Tail roam the same area. Here no doubt, I will carry
the 350 Gr. 450 round.

45-70 brass is cheaper & just a good OLD cartridge & if you don't reload you can get +p loads from PMC
