204 Ruger barrel life?
« on: August 01, 2005, 02:29:12 AM »
I wonder if these are barrel burners like say the 22-250, which by popular consensus, is only good for about 1500 to 2000 rounds no matter which make and model you own. The 204's may be better than that but I was just wondering. Anybody with any knowledge on this one?
I was thinking about one of the UVF's in either caliber and then add an accessory barrel of the other caliber, but the 22-250 life span has kinda got me shying away from that caliber now. Maybe a 223/204 combo is in order. I already have a 223 UV 24", but it might be ok to have one in the UVF too.

Barrel Life for 22-250
« Reply #1 on: August 01, 2005, 04:16:30 AM »
I've had a 22-250 with a stainless barrel for nearly ten years now and have put more than 2500 rounds thru it. Accuracy is still good but there must be some throat erosion as I cannot locate the rifling as I once was able to. Barrel material is important. I suspect that Handi barrels are only mild steel so barrel life will be less. Also it depends on how hot you load it. I've tended toward the hot side. I would think that if you load a Handi near the middle of the load charts you will get probably 2000 rounds thru it with good accuracy. If you want great barrel life it would be hard to beat the .223.

Good shooting

the 223's barrel life is like 7000-10000 there is no way to beat that but when the 204 ruger first came out they where saying that it would have barrel life that would leave the 22-250 in the dust but not quite make the 223 from what i've heard its about 5000-6000 . my advise would be to buy it shoot it all you can and if you ever burn it out just go get an other one and use the old as a barrel blank  (humm 222 rem mag in a handi me like)
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

The key to barrel life is to not let it get to hot. You can burn a 22 L.R. barrel up if you keep shooting as fast as you can and get it to hot. My 220 Swift has about 3000 rds. put through it by me,and I bought it used. Sub 1/4" groups and and less is still very possible with this gun. I just don't shoot it fast and hard enough to burn the barrel out, even in P.D. towns. Digger
