I agree with you 100%.  Not meaning to demean anyone, but I question how many of those claimed 400+ yard shots on deer are verified?  Could it be that they're really 200 yard shots and the shooter just thinks the distance is greater than it really is?

Maybe where you come from shots of 400 yards are not common BUT come out west where it's not uncommon to have to take shots from one ridge to another and sometimes with a smaller ridge or two in between.  Sure there are lots that want to say “get closer if you’re a hunter” but that isn’t always an option.  Then they say let it go and try another day.  Easy to say but when the rack has 4 or more points per side and the spread runs 30+” I would rather not take the chance of never seeing it again.  One thing that has become popular out west is rangefinders.  I've got three of them and carry one whenever I go outdoors.  Another thing is most of the hunters I know and hunt with have higher powered scopes on their rifles(4-16X is very popular out here - I myself have 6-24X on many of my rifles).  Aids when the range gets long.  Lawdog

Lawdog

Well put, & it is a different world out West than some people who hunt in
the East all the time can visualize. I am going back to Wyoming this Oct.
to take my oldest son on an Antelope hunt. I don't even think about going out there without a Rangefinder.

Even on our families "old home place" where I hunt here in AR., I have
a right-of-way stand & a couple of stands overlooking grown up fields that
offer long shots. I also bowhunt, handgun & muzzleload hunt & have taken
alot of game up very close. I guess this is why it amuses me so much
when I hear the old remark that if you were a hunter, you could get closer. So, by that reasoning when I am setting in my right of way stand
with my 300 & can cover all 6 main trails, I am not as good a hunter as I
would be if sitting in the same stand with a lesser gun I could take deer
in only 4 of the trails and let the others walk. It is like you said in your
example of the Big racked Buck, you rarely get to see them again. Like
Redhawk mentioned one time how he has seen so many big Bucks he
has had to let walk while bow hunting, & that of course happens to me too.
So, when I sit in one of these stands, I believe in taking advantage of the
opportunity.

I know what you mean about long shots. In the Arctic Circle in Alaska on our Caribou hunt ,all the shots on Caribou were well over 200 yards.  No place to hide and no trees make for long shots.  :D

rgr that Lawdog here in Montana you may get a chance at a buck of a lifetime but he may bee 600 yards away and movin out,Im not the kind of guy to call that an unethical shot because i shoot long ranges all summer so I can make the shot, does NOT mean Im gonna get that deer every time but it does mean I have a very good chance!2 years ago I had the chance to shoot a big buck movin some does over the top of a ridge about 450 away and if they crossed the next fence they were off our property so....BOoooooommmmmm......Whackkkkkk.Hit him low in the shoulder and broke bolth front legs, dead deer,on the flipside last year I killed my best non-typical MD at the amazing distance of 35 yards!!I made a stalk on him and came up over the hill behind him and he never knew I was there,of course he was a 3 legged deer so i had that to my advantage.

Boone and Crockett gave me an honorable mention for this deer because he is so unusual and has a 38" outside spread. The moral of the story (besides showing off my deer) is that out here i have to be prepared for anything from 10 feet to 600 yards and knowing your rifle and having a capable cartridge make me successful in our terrain.
If it aint fair chase its FOUL,and illegal in my state!
