should I send it back again
« on: February 23, 2003, 05:52:50 AM »
I just got my contender frame back from the factory. I sent it in because its old a needed to be updated, and it would'n cock every time  I open the action. After getting it back I see that they put a new hammer, trigger, and trigger guard and who knows what else. I was very happy with their service untill I installed one of my barrels (both made in the 70's I have two). I could not open the action with taking out the action pin. I noticed that without the barrel on everything works fine. When I look into the action without the barrel installed I noticed that the levers that push on the barrel lugs look like they were ground down at the top for about 1/4 inch or so at least they are shiny there and the rest is black.  So after all this  should I send it back or is there something I'm missing Thanks in advance

257 Rock, What you have is sold lugs on your 70 Year barrels. You need spit lugs with the updated frame. The slit lugs help the gun open easyer. Call T/C and tell them what has happen and request them too send you a couple sets of lugs for your updated frame. I am sure it will be at no cost. Lugs are easy to install. Hope this helps, Twyman

That's why I hope I never have to send mine in.  It is a frame of '79 manufacture, not easy open, but I don't have arthritis (yet) so no problem.  My frame has cheerfully accepted all 6 of the barrels I have, including two with solid locking lugs and 4 modern barrels.  I have had zero misfires (except when I forgot to switch the selector back from rimfire)  :-D I hope my contender never needs to be "improved".

Rock,
Before I'd send it in again, I'd find someone else with a frame (maybe your local gun shop has one they'll let you use for a minute) and try my barrels on it. Some solid bolt barrels will have trouble on newer frames, some won't. If they work on another frame (newer model like yours has been modified to) then the problem is most likely the frame. If they don't than your barrels will have to be updated to the split bolt. After you try another frame contact TC again and talk to one of their tech reps. Every time I've talked to them, they give lots of info and ways to check other stuff before telling you mail anything to them. Nice folks most of the time.
