Links to the trigger shim and best price for the RB trigger are posted above.

If the scope is a big game scope and you shoot it at 50yds, your not gonna get the best groups cuz of parallax error, so don't be disappointed if that happens. Your groups should be 1"-1½" at 100yds for the first 150-300 rounds or so then improve unless you lap the bore first. Sometimes out of the box will be better, but not usually, all of mine took a good break in before providing the best accuracy. Hornaday 17gr Vmax would be my first choice of ammo, if any will well, the odds are it will. Next would be Federal Vmax. I wouldn't buy a lot of ammo at first, a box of each to start, then when you find one that shoots good, try to get more of the same lot number.

Some get great accuracy out of the box, but most don't....none of mine did, even the CZ which has a hammer forged barrel still only shot 1" at first.....It'll just take a while for the bore to simmer down and be consistent. Don't be alarmed about a flyer in each group, that happens too often and is normal!! :(

a lot of the problems i had today was the trigger. i dont have problems with triggers because i can usually adjust to them and do ok anyway.

this one is odd...like...it lets off halfway through the pull and then all of a sudden goes the whole way like its a compound bow or something lol.

i dont wanne spend $70 on it but it looks like i may anyway.

whats the deal with that? it appears that it replaces the whole trigger? are the replacements as nice as the marlin one? the wide trigger with the grooves fits my finger nicely.

Not the whole trigger mechanism, but the trigger and sear. Id' try the shim first, it costs nothing and many are real happy with it.

MAR-17 is the one for your 917....

i shot it more today and i am confused because off the sandbags and rest, it shot four shots into one ragged 3/8" hole at 25 yards. very nice.

then at fifty yards it opened up to maybe an inch. not bad but i would eventually expect better.

then at 100, still off the rest, the pattern went everywhere. there was no rhyme or reason. it was more like 2 inches or a little bigger and it when i went to shoot for precision and to make a small group, it seemed to "walk" the group up and to the right as i shot a five shot group.

i have a bull barrel, so shouldnt it keep from getting hot enough to "walk"?

i am pretty frustrated because when i saw that 25 yard group i really got excited as to what it might do at 100.

i am going to buy a couple boxes of different brands, including the hornadys, since i havent shot that for a group in this gun yet.

its been about 100 shots, should i clean it and THEN start with new ammo?

Matt, you need to experiment a little with the action screws, most find that around 25 in/lbs is good for most rimfires. If they're too tight or too loose, it will do funny stuff. And barrel heat will affect POI. I usually can get away with a couple, maybe 3,  5 shot groups when the weather is cool, but if it's 90+ degrees there like it is here, one group at a time will be the limit then wait several minutes for it to cool before shooting for more groups.

it was 95 here when i was at the range so i am sure that had something to do with it.

i guess i expected the bull barrel to make up for that but apparently that was a lot to expect.

i bought remingtons and federals last night. i couldnt find the hornadys where i was, i will look more this week. they had a sale and sold out of em.

what about the rubber o-ring, like the handis?

The barrel of the 917VS should already be floated, check it by runnning a $1 bill between the barrel and fore stock, it shouldn't be touching all the way back to the front mounting screw.

ok time for me to eat crow...but good crow because this gun is a tack driver.

i picked up remingtons and federals last night.

i shot em today. at 100 yards the remingtons shot 2 quarter inch groups. the federals shot two groups that averaged about 3/4 inch.

so i have two loads that shoot in this gun. just for the heck of i i shot the ccis again and again got a scattered pattern with fliers.

so it was the ammo all along. if i had picked up remingtons or federals my chance the first time i got ammo i would have been a big fan.

so i am sorry for the complaining. i think i may have a new favorite gun now that it can do this.

i smoked a groundhog tonight at 90 yards as i was leaving the range. i guessed it at 75-80 yards and i rested it on the top of the bed rail on my truck. one shot through the lungs, bang flop.

very nice, i am all smiles tonight  :-)

Will the pentel-spring trick work with the new Marlin trigger?

Also, I have found that the lot-to lot variation is greater than the brand-to-brand, as long as the bullet type/weight is the same.  If you've got ammo that shoots great, go get as much of the same lot as you can afford; the next lot they have may very well not shoot as good in your rifle.

I've found that after a good cleaning it takes about 10 rounds to get shooting it's best, then shoots real fine up to 200-250 rounds.  this trend is apparent in both my 17HMRs, one is a CZ American the other an NEF Sportster.

I love 'em both.

shot a group tonight off a makeshift rest on a block of wood at the range.

shot a group at 100 yards with federals (mind you, the SECOND best grouping ammo in my gun) that was less than 1/4"

that is downright amazing. wow.

i wanna shoot it every day now.
