Found this on ebay, am current high bidder but know I most likely won't go as high as some will be willing to bid.  If someone has their heart set on this feel free but it won't go cheap, I'll help make sure of it.

This guy is gonna do OK.

PS Don't tell Quick about this, he has WAAAYY too many Handi's.  Just kiddn quick!

Can a .357 max shoot .357mag and .38spl?

Or does it take special round?

Dirty Tiger,   the .357 Maximum is just a longer .357 Mag.  You can shoot .38spl, .357mag, .357max and a couple of the shorter obsolete cartridges in it.

I dont think I'll even bother bidding on this..  I'd love to have it though, but after watching other Handy barrels go for God awful amounts I don think I'll waste my time. lol

Dirty Tiger, 357 Maxie can shoot all 3 plus some others,
Plus I think maybe rebore ones are better if the orignal Maximum
was long throated like 357 Mag. Just my 2 cents. Marv.

question from a under educated handi man, i thought barrels had to be factory fitted due to looser machining tolerances? what do you do to ebay barrels since they weren't fitted to your rifle? and any heavy barreled .308 Ultras :D on ebay?

Yup, that caliber is expendable for me I've thought about reboring/rechambering that one to 35 whelen, but the twist rate is wrong, or I would already have done it.

well my high bid didn't last too long. Got out bid at $76.

As for the fitting process it's not all that hard just check Quicks fitting procedure in the FAQs at the top of the page.

They usually do but we are finding more and more they just fit right on.  Some mods may be necessary on this one since the factory MAX barrels are older ones.

I don't know about you guys.  If you bid on E-bay in the first 4 days, it just jacks up the price.  I watch the item and I log on to E-bay in the last 5 minutes to check the price.  I keep refreshing it to see if there are any last minute bidders.  I only bid in the last two minutes.  If you refresh the item and it looks like someone else is doing the same thing....keep bidding in small increments and you will probably win.  IF YOU REALLY WANT THE ITEM....and it has been going up in small $$$$ increments.....do a few small increments first just to let the other bidder that you are also bidding.  Then at the last minute....toss in an extra 10 bucks or so.  If it has been going up a buck or two at a time....it will take too long for the other bidder to realize that you have bid more than the minimum bid.
....make it count

I would stay in the running but i have 2 barrels coming from the factory and one coming from 870 express mag. So i think i'll have to pass on this one. Sure would like to have it though.

He says it's an "Ultra" barrel but I can't see enough detail to deturmine that.  Why would NEF put a pistol cartridge iin a 24" barrel to begin with? Seems like a dimishing return kind of situation. I see he also didn't mention that some smithing may be required to fit it to your frame.  Has himself open for some whining from the uninformed.

Yep, it's an Ultra if it is a factory job. Mine is so stamped. And the 357 Max operates at high enought pressure that it can use all 24 inches of barrel to develop speed. I know this is just the barrel for sale, but the complete rifle came with a straight pistol grip laminated stock.

Haywire: I've wondered about the "uninformed" buying these barrels too. I wonder how many buyers think they are just a swap deal like the T/C?

peak pressure is one thing, but can you get enough powder in there to maintain the expansion required to sustain the pressure as the pressure vessel volume rapidly expands.  The length may be nice for looks and weight balance, but I would guess it is well into the point of diminishing returns for most common powders and lodings.

Talking about diminishing returns....that's for sure....I'm shooting 300gr Nosler partitions with a healthy dose of H4198 in a 22" 45-70 Handi at just over 2400fps, the same load in my 32" BC does just over 2450fps, not a lot of gain for an extra 10" of barrel with that powder. :(

...my interest keeps getting sturred up. I knew that the 357 will shoot 357, 38 Sp, +P, and can get reamed out to Max, but i didn't know it can shoot any more than these cartridges.
Does anyone have a complete list of cartridges you can shoot in a 357 barrel?

A sportster barrel won't work on an ultra or handi frame because rimfires require an offset firing pin. It may be possible to get a 17 cal barrel that fits on your centerfire frame and rechamber it to 17 hornet, 17 bee, 17 Mach IV, 17 Rem, etc.
