I need to know who makes the black tallon (.277 & 140 grain) bullet and if possible what it BC is... What I need most though is what make the bullet is... Thanks

Winchester made them. Primarily a hand gun bullet. discontinued public sales. They were a coated bullet,that supposedly penatrated some body armor. I believe failsafes might have been called blacktalons?, at first, untill a lawsuit issue? They changed the name and coating formula? I'm going from hearsay, and memory, NEITHER very reliable. O

The coating had nothing to do with pennetrating vests. Black Talons were poor performers on vests. Your idea probably comes from the old teflon coated bullets that the media named cop killers. the teflon helped to reduce the wear on the barrel but had nothing to do with its ability to penetrait a vest.

You are looking for the Failsafe loaded ammo by Winchester and the individual bullets are sold from Combined Technologies from Winchester and Nosler for the .277 rifle caliber.

The pistol bullet took a bad media wrap because of the ripping "talons" They said it could be a buzz saw and could kill people and hurt doctorsremoving the bullets, etc. (This bullet can kill they say. I wonder if I am buying the wrong kind then. What kind of bullet can't kill? Ha Ha Dumb anti gun people) I think Winchester changed the bullet to the SX Range and didn't have the talons sticking out. This is in the 45, 40, 9mm and defense round. They didn't come out with a handgun hunting replacement in 357 or 44 mag.

You're right, and I stand corrected. After doing some research last nite, the biggest objector's to BT's were a few lawyers,polititions,Surprise,and the medical community. Because of it's tissue destroying expansion. Reguardless, It hasn't been marketed to the shooting public since "98"?. But if you hunted around, you might still find some.O

Yes they were very good bullets for thier time but now there are actually better bullets performance wise. The Speer Goldot, Feseral Hydra-shock, Eldarado Starfires just to name a few, are excellent rounds. The Talons have that mythical atmosphere to them because they were banned.

I have seen the handgun bullet go for $40 a box to collectors. When I tried them in wet newsprint they performed as adveristed. Too bad with the media screwing it up.

The name Failsafe came from the project. They wouldn't fail. Ross Seyfried still was at Guns and Ammo and had a big article about both the rifle and the pistol bullets with nigal and pig hunting. They got the steel cup in the bullet from that when they squashed on some big bones. I think the orginal Black Talon rifle bullets also had the Failsafe name on it too. When the press ripped on the pistol bullets the name was changed to Failsafe
