Stuck Case

I had a bunch of 45/70 brass that wasn't sized correctly, yet primed. I was running it through my rifle and I have one case that refuses to eject. Any ideas? I'm going to go buy a 3/8 dowel and try and hammer that case out. Not sure what else to do...

That's the first 45-70 stuck case I've ever read of here!! Chamber must be clean and dry.....did it load and the action close on it ok??

Yep.. but it was some of that brass that we talked about. It had been expanded too much. I think that's the problem. My fault, not the cartridge. But it went in the rifle alright...

I'm kinda thinking I'm gettin' the shaft on this deal. It's really stuck.

Pour a little penatrating oil down the bore so it can go around the case and soak a bit, then push it out with a rod. What kind of load are you using?

Remove the barrel from the frame before you do the penatrating oil thing so it doesn't go in the frame when it gets past the case.

The MSDS doesn't show anything that looks like it might harm the bluing....ya might rub a little on the bottom of the underlug to see if it leaves a stain, but I doubt that it will.

What you should do is go to a welding supply or shop and buy
 get a brass welding rod 36 inches long just smaller than your smallest    
 caliber rifle, usely the weight of the rod will knock the brass out.
 Those brass are costly, lots of the time shops will give you one.

No...That case was really stuck. It took some serious force to get that out of there AFTER I put in the penetrating oil. That thing refused to budge.

I understand what your talking about...I had a similar experiance 1 time...but a good 1pc cleaning rod of appropriate diameter would have helped a great deal...not one of the multi-piece aluminum universal ones designed for smaller calibers..even one of the heavy shotgun cleaning rods will work for the 45-70...and give you a advantage when something like this happens...I use a very stiff rod when cleaning and polishing my 45-70's...I don't want any flex in it..if this is what you used..my apologies..

No worries Mac... I didn't want to bend my dewey. 69 cent 5/16 dowel rod worked wonders. This shouldn't happen again, I just had my dies messed up. My newest loads chamber great.

A lot of shooter use a pull through like the Boresnake or Otis system for cleaning, they work, but they don't replace a good rod, they only offer an alternative for cleaning. I use a ΒΌ" stainless steel cleaning rod on my 45-70 and all of my muzzleloaders, it has saved mine and a lot of other shooter's bacon on many an occaision!!

Yep, I tried to buy a single unfluxed 1/4" rod a couple of years ago, they just gave it to me. Great for making brass crosspins for walnut slab knife handles. A 6" chunk of it would be handy for clearing jams in 270 and larger barrels.
