I am thinking of taking an Encore Pistol in .30-06 shooting the Hornady bonded bullet.  Should it be ok for warthog, impala and such?

thanks!!

YEah it's just fine and will do a good job. Warthog are incredibly tough though and many species don't bleed much. You should be well prepared to pick perfect shot opportunities and don't expect to just knock them over with that gun. My Clients and I have shot 100's of game with my 30/06 it always works but we do have some tracking from time to time. Just be patient and pick your shots. Don't let an anxious young PH push you to shoot before you are ready. I would go so far as the request a PH that hunts with Handgun, Muzzleloadrs or archey to be sure you have a guy that understands your needs.

Myself and my Professional hunters on staff hunt with primitive weapon hunters all the time and know this business very well.

The bigger problem is the new firearm laws in RSA. Getting a handgun in can be done and its legal but you should apply for your permits at least 4 months in advance. You will likely need to have the serial number of the gun stamped into the barrel as well. This is the Law today but it been overlooked for a few months now. They will begin making this mandatory in the next few weeks or months and certainly by the peak of the next Season beginning in April or MAy.

I very strongly suggest you have your chosen Outfitter/booking agent/PH or who ever is helping you sort out your handgun permits or you will never get that gun into the country. The old days of easy handgun permits are long gone now.

Myself and my staff are well versed in the handgun permit process, don't take it for granted like the Pre 9/11 days. We can sort out your permits if you hunt with us no problems. Just be sure you put your PH or Outfitter in the loop to help you. You will struggle trying to get this done yourself.

4. Prohibited firearms which may NOT be imported into South Africa include:

a. Any fully automatic weapon
b. Any semi-automatic weapon
c. Handgun/s for self-defense
d. Weapons which fall under military categories

I'm interested in "d." does that mean rifles (boltaction) that are chambered in military calibers (ie, .308/7.62 Nato & .223 Rem./5.56mm Nato)? Are the laws similar in other African countries?

No that is not the case. Letter "D" has nothing to do with sporting arms or shoulder fired arms except bazookas and RPG's letter "D" has to do with weapons like bombs. RPG's etc. not firearms like 308 and 30/06 etc

What a bizzare coincidence that your getting a 300WSM barrel. Maybe you can stop the order if it's not delivered yet?

I was recently at a shoiting range with a friend who is a member there. While I was watching 4 guys shoot their encores and contenders two of the fellas were angry about something, not fighing with each other but rather just stressed about their guns. With head phones and ear plugs it was hard to hear them.

During target change outs I was talking to a third guy in the group and he said that they were both disspointed in their 300WSM barrels and handloads. One also has a 308 barrel and was getting the same performance from the 308 as the 300WSM. We spoke a bit until the 300WSM guy came back and he said it's true that the 308 matches the barrel length so well that the 300WSM cannot improve performace with that shorter barrel over what the 308 was doing. Plus the recoil was much less and the gun more accurate in general.

I'm not knowledgable of this from personal experience but it stands to reason that bigger case would struggle in a short tube where a simple 308 loaded properly in the same length would likly be far more efficient. Something to think about anyway.

Oh One other thing to mention, he also had a 308 necked up to 338 and that thing was sweet. It had very low muzzle blast, it was one of the quietest discharge sounds I have ever experienced with a centerfire gun. It was also very accurate and he was shooting at the 200 yard targets.
I don't recall the velocity but remember thinking it was a  surprisingly good at the time he said it.

Most reputable makers will NOT chamber an Encore to any of the short magnums by Remington or Winchester not the longer ones by Remington. They are just not considered safe in them. Shoot yourself in the foot if you like. But you have been warned.
