M77 or M77MkII?
« on: August 03, 2005, 05:21:47 PM »
I really like Ruger's M77MkII, however, I recently found an older, tang-safety M77 at a local gun store.  It's in a caliber I want, so I thought I might give it another look.  I've heard some reports that some older M77's had poor quality barrles.  Other people have said this is a load of bunk.  Is there anything I should be wary of with the M77?

I don't think the bad barrel situation is a bunch of bunk, they did have some problems with outsourced barrels.  Ruger now makes their own barrels and they are very good.  On the postive side the older models had an adjustable trigger and a tang safety that is very handy.  I wouldn't be worried about buying an older model if I liked the rifle and it was in the cartridge I wanted.
Good Shooting,
George

The so called barrel problem that Ruger had was in the first year they introduced the M77 - 1968.  Ruger had a problem with one of their suppliers and even then only in a few calibers.  Chances of you getting one of these rifles is slim to zero.  Even if you do Ruger will replace the barrel at no cost to you.  Call and ask them if you want.

Sure is.  That someone else will buy it while you are trying to make up your mind.  Me for one.  Lawdog
