Other possible calibers are 45/70 or 30/30.

The .35 Remington is a super cartridge for the use you indicate!

A definite step up from the 30-30 and a noticable step down from the 45-70.  Comfortable to shoot and you should be able to take what you want at any reasonable range.  The Hornady 180ssp and 200 grain interlock
will penetrate clear through any deer on side shots.

Be careful and check twice

I'm going to be using my T/C Contender 35 Rem for deer this fall. I'm working on a load using the Nosler Partition HG in .357. It should work great!

Good choice, The 35 Rem should get the job done in good style, Low recoil and plenty strong with 200 gr pill. :D .........Joe.......

:cb2: The .35 Remington has been doing a great job on deer, black bear, and hogs since 1908. However, all three of the calibers you mentioned are excellent for the job. I love my .45-70 because it's one of the most accurate rifles I own, but it can be overkill on deer. The .30-30 is great on all three: deer, bear and hogs, but the .35 fits very nicely in the middle and won't pound you like the .45-70 will. Go for it. If you read the threads in the lever action forum you'll see that .35 owners really love this caliber, and most of them started out with .30-30s and .45-70s.
