I need a .308 die...Anybody have one to let go cheap?
« on: August 05, 2005, 10:30:46 AM »
I really would like a .308 die set, and cannot find them at a reasonable price.  I know this isn't the classifieds, but I don't think this would get noticed in the general classifieds.  Thanks, Robert

Robert, what do you consider 'reasonable' ?  Also, are you looking for a  set that fits a reloading press, or one of the proprietary presses such as RCE's Walnut Hill, or Corbin Company's 'S' press? I think even a used low end .308 die set ( core swage and point form) for jacketed bullets will run about $150. Of course, you can get that back, and possibly more, by selling it on one of the auction sites. And, I think Graybeard makes an exception about buy/sell swaging stuff on this forum ( rather than the Classified) as it's a little esoteric for most sportsmen. 8)

Yes, i would like to find one for a regular reloading press.  I keep checking E-bay....they finally have a .308 this week, but get this.  The same guy has a CH press and .308 dies.....AND HE SPLIT THEM UP for auction.  I would love them both, but separately.....taking the chance of winning one and not the other.....  I am not even going to bid.  Really ticks me off.
  Thanks for the reply.

If that's the case I would suggest you bid on the .308 set. But a word of caution: the seller more than not doesn't know what they are selling... whether all the parts are there and if they are unflawed. I bet 90% of those CH dies were for pistol bullets. Finding any rifle bullet dies is a rarety. Those specialized  presses come up for auction  frequently, often by themselves without dies. You can bid on one until you finally win one. At your price.
I just took a look at the die you are speaking of: it makes soft lead bullets which are not what you are looking for in a rifle. You have to use soft lead as wheelweight type metal doesn't swage well unless you have a much larger press and stronger dies. Even with a gas check at low velocity you would have leading problems unless you also had a cannelure device. Too, where are you going to get the lead slugs that are needed?  8)
