22LR hollowpoint expansion:4"-12"barrel?
« on: August 05, 2005, 03:49:38 PM »
I'm wondering how expansion will occur from cal. 22LR revolvers with 4" to 12" barrels, using "standard" high velocity hollowpoints to 50 yards?
I'll be hunting rabbits,squirrels,grouse.
Thanks.

hans - the longer the barrel the faster the velocity (within limits) and the greater the expansion.  However, out to 50 yds you may not get much expansion at all.  There are some folks who use the truncated or flatnosed bullet in the 22lr to make up for a lack of expansion out to that distance.  There also is 'one of those devices' that allows you to flatnose your 22 slug for better impact effectiveness.

I think this is one of those questions that can be explained best through testing in your own personal guns.  Thankfully, 22lrs are inexpensive enough to conduct a lot of testing.  Have fun.  Mikey.

.22 LR HP expansion

I did some phone book test comparing CCIs and Winchester LRHP in a FreedomArms Mini Revolver and a Winchester leveraction rifle.  The CCI's definitely gave superior expansion from the short barrel while the expension of bullets fired from the rifle barrel was about the same for both brands.  I'm not sure just what to attribute this to, but would suspect a difference in the burning charactistics of the powders.  This phenomina was observed in the .22 mag caliber as well.   My conclusion was that if I was hunting with a handgun, I'd likely get better results with the CCIs .  This was back in the mid 80s so not sure if it's still valid.  For what it's worth
