Wow a lot has changed!
« on: August 06, 2005, 03:47:49 AM »
All,

Been away from Alabama for 2.5 years, and I am coming home soon.  I just read the Alabama Wildlife website and realized that there is a two significant things have happened.

1.  You can now use Crossbows during archery season.  These are no longer just for the handicaped.

2.  There is a special muzzleloader season of 4 days.

Am I correct, that both of these were not in place two years ago?

Thanks,
Nixsrs93

PS - I will be hunting in Ethelsville

You missed Turkey decoys are also legal now. All 3 went into effect last year I think.

Guys,

I have some questions:

1.  Can you have a scope with magnification on the muzzleloader?

2.  What sites are legal on a Crossbow, I see where scopes are not legal?

Thanks,
Nixsrs93

Actually the muzzle loader season has been around for at least two seasons already, maybe three. It did get longer last year.

Scopes are NOT allowed during the muzzle loader season.

As I understand it you may use a red dot sight or the factory supplied iron type sights on crossbows but not scopes.

Hey GreyBeard, I think scopes are allowed during the muzzleloader season.

If I understand it correctly, the only time when iron sights are required and scopes are not allowed, is on designated "Flintlock Hunts"....different from primitive weapons or muzzleloader (caps, 209, etc).

I don't want to mislead anyone, but I've read the posted regulations, and the best I can tell, flintlock hunts are the only ones where scopes aren't allowed.  Primitive weapon hunts and muzzleloader seasons seem to be okay (note: I didn't look at the crossbow issue)

I think this one is definately worth a call to check on though.  Sometimes it is hard to understand if it is allowed or not unless they specifically state it.  If I've misunderstood this please call me out on it as I'd much rather be wrong here than wrong in hunting with a scope when I shouldn't.

You can find most of the regs at http://www.outdooralabama.com/hunting/regulations/

JCM,

Yep, I have read the whole thing, but darned if I can tell you for sure what is allowed.  They do state clearly that nothing that magnifies or cast a beam of light can be used on a Bow or Crossbow.

But, I can't see where they specify about the muzzle loaders.  Greybeard, are you pretty sure?  Anybody else know?

Thanks,

Yeah "pretty sure". Not positive tho. Will need to do some more research. I've not yet bought my license for the new season and haven't seen the new books for this year. I'm going on memory really. I'm pretty sure that at least when it first came to be that the new early muzzle loader season required only iron sights, no scopes. It may have changed and CRS may even have caused me to forget.

When I can I'll check it out a bit more thoroughly.

I'm pretty sure scopes on muzzle loaders are now legal.  I recall this very subject being discussed at length on another internet forum last year.   I took a quick look at this years regs. and didn't see any mention of scopes NOT being legal.  As I understand it the scopes became legal in 2004.

To be on the safe side, you might want to call and ask Montgomery DCNR at (334) 242-3465 and ask for Law Enforcement to double-check.
